Issue with transparency/blending in Photoshop

Hello!

I’m trying to make a few icons for my game, however when trying to use the lighten blending mode to get rid of the black, it doesn’t do anything.

AFAIK, this should just remove the black and leave the white as transparent, but I’m not sure what I am doing wrong. I’m using Photoshop, however I am using a black background as white on white is difficult to work with.

Here’s the icon I am working on with the black background:

Here’s the result, as well as the blending preferences.

TIA for the help!

Edit: For reference, I’m using the chat icon, I will show what it should look like. Note the curved edges, which is kind of what I am trying to replicate.

With a black background:

With a pink background:

If the drawing is on the first layer and the black background is on the second, just hide the second layer by selecting that ‘eye’ icon beside the layer and then save as .png. The blending option Lighten does not get rid of the black color on that layer but only makes it so that anything black (or the range you’ve chosen) doesn’t show up on other layers.

If you want the white to be slightly transparent, adjust the layer opacityps
