It's time to remaster classic Roblox Limiteds (Textures, Meshes & Implementing PBR)

Greetings everyone,

With all the massive updates to avatar items lately - like PBR, layered clothing and other dynamic features - it feels like some of Roblox’s most iconic part, the Limited items, are getting left abandoned.

I am writing to propose a “remaster/modernization” on older, official Roblox Limited items. While these items carry massive legacy and nostalgia to the platform and the players, their technical implementation - such as outdated and broken meshes, low-quality textures - is starting to actively clash with modern Roblox avatars and environment standards.

Here are some examples of older Limited items that have blurry/low-quality textures:

And a direct comparison between a new generation Limited item and an older one:

The primary issues currently affecting classic Limited items:

  • Blurred and Low-Resolution Textures: Many high-valued classic hats and wearable accessories were uploaded during an era with strict texture limits and modeling software. On modern R15 avatars and high-resolution screens, these textures look incredibly pixelated and blurry compared to the newer released items, such as the ones that use PBR textures.

  • Uncentered and Broken Meshes: Several classic items suffer from pivot point issues, causing them to sit incorrectly on modern heads. Although there’s a built-in accessory adjustment option at the avatar editing settings, it would be optimal to update them overall. Other ones have clipping issues or broken geometry that were never corrected over the many years after being published.

Why Updating These Items Benefits Everyone:

  • 1 - Increased User Interest & Market Value: A visual refresh would breathe new life into older limiteds. If an iconic crown suddenly featured actual metallic reflections via PBR, or a classic visor looked sharp and correctly positioned, Limited items demand would spike and arouse interest to players into the owning these items and being active in the trading community. This increases their market value and drives trading volume (which directly benefits Roblox via the marketplace transaction fee).

  • 2 - Visual Consistency: As developers create incredibly realistic and immersive games, players wearing classic Limiteds often look out of place. Updating these assets ensures that Roblox’s most premium items look like they actually belong in modern games.

  • 3 - Preserving Platform History: These items represent the history of the Roblox economy. Rather than letting them become obsolete novelties that collect dust sitting in inventories, bringing them up to modern standards honors their legacy and keeps them relevant for the next generation of players.

The solution:

I propose that Roblox dedicates a small team (or partners with trusted UGC creators) to carefully remaster the meshes and textures of some official Limiteds. The goal isn’t to redesign them, overly enhance or change their iconic look, but simply to remaster them: center the pivots, increase the resolution of the textures, and maybe apply basic PBR maps where appropriate (e.g., metalness/roughness for gold and iron items).

I totally understand that most of these items have their uniqueness and value due to older textures and meshes, but the older Roblox engine had different lighting processing which would make most of these items look more high quality, glossy and shiny (such as the sparkle time fedora series) instead of opaque and blank, so I do believe that these properties should be brought back to these items bringing their former glory back to the platform.

I’d love to hear what other developers, and mainly traders think about this. Would you be more inclined to trade for classic Limiteds if they were optimized for modern Roblox or maintaining the default look that they currently have?

Firstly, possibly an AI slop post, secondly wrong category, thirdly, horrible idea, even as someone who doesn’t give a rats about limiteds.

People hate the dynamic limited heads, they’d HATE any amount of change to the remaining limited items they have.

People want these items to stay in time, and I’m with them on that stance honestly.

Wow, “AI slop”, that’s a classic. If someone disagrees or types in paragraphs they automatically assume it’s AI written because nobody bothers to write correctly nowadays. Whatever you say.

But to the topic at hand, I disagree. Some of these items are so old and out dated that people don’t even wear them anymore, they’re just being collect for trading purposes, they mean nothing more than that. That’s why they should get a revamp, traders wouldn’t dislike these changes if they were “minimal”, as I mentioned.

Nonetheless I appreciate your opinion, thanks for commenting.

the only time roblox actually tried this it sent an item worth 45k robux down to 6k in a few days:

I don’t think modifying old items is a good idea. Regardless of if the new texture is received well or poorly by the community it will completely change the value and demand of it. Obviously this is very bad for market health and can lead to overall instability.

Even outside of the value concerns I’m just not a fan of it on a personal level. If I buy an item I am buying it because I want the item in its current state. If randomly the item I bought changes to something I didn’t buy it doesn’t feel fair

This item was only heavily modified recently due to copyright issues because it was basically a copy paste of Jason Voorhees’s mask from “Friday The 13th” horror movie series. Most of the other items are original and would not go for a heavy change as this item went.
