I've found a potential game opportunity, opinions how to go about recreating it

So there is this game that I found not too long and it averages like 30 players
It’s actually a fairly simple game but I’ve seen some major bugs that could definitely be fixed and improved. For example sometimes the whole game breaks and everyone has to leave the server for it to reset, players can glitch through walls, the mechanics aren’t really that good on some parts of the game and the UI is pretty horrible…

And the game hasn’t been update in 10 months just to give a timeline…

I’m confident I can re-create the game and bring over the players from that game to mine, but could this work though?

It really depends on the game. You said it’s a simple game, which is good. However, you should implement your own features, and make sure there is enough replayability. Also don’t forget to give credits to the original game(A short “Inspired by x” should be good enough).
