Just Lost All My Progress On A Topic

I’m not necessarily complaining, I just wanna know why this happened.

For the past 4 days, I’ve been working on a tutorial to create a GFX. I just finished about an hour and a half ago. I exited out of the developer forum, and when I came back in, more than half of what I wrote was just gone. I decided to bag the whole tutorial and delete the whole thing entirely.

I’m more confused than frustrated. I just really want to know why this happened so that I don’t make the same mistake again if it even is my fault.

The drafts feature on the forum is not meant to preserve a topic-in-progress for a long period of time. You likely closed the window before Discourse could save it. You should be writing these topics in an external text editor if you intend to iterate on them. Though, if you’re really determined to use the forum as a text editor, you could work in a private message to yourself.

Alright, can you recommend any external text editor?

Word processor applications are what I use. I write my entire topic there, copy it, paste it into a topic, and make all the adjustments and edits I need before I make the topic.

Thank you so much! Could you send me a link to that?

The downside of using an external editor is that you cannot easily upload images and videos, you have to remember to add them later. You may want to work in a DM to yourself instead of using drafts if you need this.

Text editors I use include Sublime Text, Atom, and Notepad++. Atom has a nice markdown preview extension if you go looking around, Sublime might as well.

If you have a windows 10 computer, Word should just come with the computer I think, correct me if im wrong here though.

I use VSCode with the Markdown Preview extension.

You’re able to write into md files saved on your computer and view the result at the same time, definitely recommend it.

People always say this, yet my Windows 10 machine didn’t come with any Microsoft Office software. As far as I’m aware, you gotta pay for it.
