Roblox’s age verification system was supposed to help create safer spaces by separating younger users from older users, especially when it comes to voice chat and age-restricted experiences.
However, there appears to be a major issue: some underage users are using a parent’s or another adult’s face to verify their account.
This defeats the entire purpose of age verification.
Kids can potentially end up in older age groups and gain access to features and experiences that are intended for adults. This can create situations where minors are exposed to inappropriate conversations, content, or behavior from adults who believe they are interacting with another adult.
I’ve personally seen situations that are extremely concerning. For example, while using Catalog Avatar Creator, I encountered an inappropriate avatar being used in a sexual situation involving someone who appeared to be underage. Situations like this are exactly why stronger age separation and moderation are needed.
I’ve also noticed younger users appearing in experiences and communities intended for older audiences. This includes users participating in alcohol-themed experiences and using language that would normally be filtered or restricted for younger users.
The problem with the current system
Age verification can only work if Roblox can reasonably determine that the person being verified is actually the person who owns the account.
If a child can simply use a parent’s face to pass verification, then the system isn’t actually verifying the user’s age. It’s verifying the age of someone else.
That creates several problems:
- Underage users can potentially access age-restricted experiences.
- Adults may unknowingly communicate with minors through VC or chat.
- Age-restricted communities can become filled with users who aren’t actually within the intended age range.
- Developers have less confidence that Roblox’s age-based restrictions are working as intended.
- Predators could potentially take advantage of situations where they believe they are communicating with adults.
What could Roblox do?
I don’t expect Roblox to create a perfect system overnight, but there should be additional safeguards against obvious cases of verification abuse.
Some possible improvements could include:
1. Better detection of repeated/fake verification
If an account repeatedly appears to be using different people for verification, Roblox could flag the account for additional review.
2. Stronger account-to-verification checks
Roblox could look for signals that indicate the verified person and the actual account holder may not be the same person.
3. Additional safeguards for younger accounts
Accounts with indications of being operated by someone significantly younger than the verified age could receive additional restrictions until verification can be confirmed.
4. Better reporting tools
Users should have an easy way to report suspected age-verification abuse, especially when they encounter minors in adult-only spaces.
5. Stronger moderation in age-restricted experiences
Age verification should not be treated as the only line of defense. Roblox should continue monitoring VC, chat, avatars, and behavior in these experiences.
This isn’t about punishing kids
I don’t think younger users should be treated badly for being curious or wanting to play certain experiences.
The issue is age separation and safety.
If Roblox creates an 18+ or otherwise age-restricted environment, users should be able to reasonably trust that the people they’re interacting with actually belong in that environment.
Age verification was introduced to make Roblox safer. If users can easily bypass it by having someone else complete the verification, then the system needs additional safeguards.
Roblox has made a major push toward age-based experiences and communication. Now the verification system needs to be strong enough to support that goal.
I hope Roblox takes this issue seriously, because the consequences of getting age separation wrong can be much more serious than simply having the wrong people in an 18+ experience.
