Layered clothing upload blocked by “TemporaryReferenceId (must be empty)” — also affects previously published items

When attempting to upload a layered clothing accessory to the Marketplace through Roblox Studio, validation fails with the following error on the accessory’s WrapLayer:

TemporaryReferenceId (must be empty)

I first encountered this while trying to upload a new pair of pants. I also tested an older layered clothing accessory that I successfully published about a year ago, and it now produces exactly the same error. The issue therefore does not appear to be specific to the newly created pants.

The error points to HandleWrapLayer inside the accessory’s Handle. However, TemporaryReferenceId is not visible in Studio’s Properties panel, so I cannot inspect or clear it there. Both CageMeshId and ReferenceMeshId have asset IDs assigned.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Select the layered clothing accessory in Roblox Studio.
  2. Start the Marketplace upload process.
  3. Validation fails with the TemporaryReferenceId (must be empty) error, preventing the upload.

I haven’t uploaded layered clothing in quite a while, so I’m unsure whether something has changed in the preparation or validation process. Is this a known issue, and is there a supported way to resolve it without rebuilding the accessory or its cages?

Thanks for sharing this workaround! Saving the project and restarting Roblox Studio seems to have fixed the issue for me. Really appreciate your help!

Hi all,

Apologies for the disruption, we will have this fixed today. For now, refer to this for the workaround Unexpected error when attempting to upload layered clothing - #4 by fulltime_robloxian

I’ve attempted this workaround and also restarted studio several times but still produces the error.

Will you update us when this is resolved?

Hi @crewlinks , the issue should be resolved now. Let me know if you still get the error.

Thanks!

I’m still getting the error on the recommended workaround and a new baseplate.

Are you on the latest version of studio? You should not be getting this error anymore. Please try this:

  1. Select the LC accessory
  2. Click Save To → File and store it as some rbxm file
  3. Reopen studio. Drag the rbxm file in, and click Save To → Roblox
  4. If you are still seeing the error regarding TemporaryReferenceId, please send me the rbxm
  5. If you are seeing a different error than the TemporaryReferenceId, please make a new bug report and attach the file (you can put it as a private message).

Hey! Sorry for bothering, but could you send me a message? (since I’m unable to), I’m having an issue and I’ve been stuck with no help at all for 15 days. Would be much appreciated!

I’m on the latest version currently, however the workaround fixed it. Thanks!

Although, the standard workflow of uploading still results in the TemporaryReferenceId error.

Based on the last time I tried it, I published the game ( without forget the accessory in workspace ) then i restarted roblox Studio. After that, I was able to publish the shirt without any issues, and it was approved successfully.
