Note: This is my first DevForum post, so please tell me if I did something wrong
Hey devs!
I consider myself to be an intermediate/advanced beginner level scripter. For the last 2 months, I have found myself stuck in a learning plateau. I understand ray casting (mostly), datastores, pathfinding (mostly), tweening, module scripts, camera manipulation and other “intermediate” level concepts, but I’m unable to progress past this level. It’s not like I’m not learning anything, I am learning new things, but half the time I can’t understand how they are implemented and what the use cases are for using it.
An example of something I can’t wrap my head around is advanced math. Cosine, Sine, Bezier curves, etc. While I’m still learning what these are, I don’t understand how they are implemented in code. Another example is OOP. I understand the concepts of OOP, but I don’t understand metatables, metamethods, etc. I also don’t understand parallel Luau. There’s a lot more things I’m looking to learn than just that, but those are just a few things I’m having difficulty understanding. I have looked at documentation, but about half the time I can’t understand it at all.
Does anybody have any resources/tutorials/documentation that made “advanced” scripting “click” for them, or at least make more sense? Can you tell me how you progressed to become an advanced scripter? Or am I just doing this all wrong, and are there fundamental concepts that I should understand before progressing?
Thank you for your time.

Hi!
I think nearly every scripter/programmer has encountered this situation. There is no certain criteria, or “boxes that you have to fill in” where you can label yourself as an advanced scripter. In my opinion, a professional scripter is one which can quickly adapt - you do not need to know the entire documentation, It’s a matter of continuous learning.
My advice to you is let your imagination run free: the other day I wanted to make an administrator panel in my game, like a terminal. So, I got to planning - what do I need to know? UI ( I decided to learn photoshop from scratch just to make it more advanced). HttpService - i wanted to make webhooks in my game, to allow people to submit bans / kicks from discord.
It’s a matter of planning, and imagination.
Hope you get inspired, and good luck!

It’s not the same for everyone, but I watched tutorials, looked at other people’s code, then started scripting things for practice, then the more you use it the more you learn & remember.

I agree with you. This is how I got the hang of concepts that I needed. I learnt about Spatial Queries because I was making hitboxes for one of my games.

Maths is going to be vital for developing a game wether it is creating a curve, applying physics to objects or even just calculating simple vectors you need to have a solid idea on how to implement it. I suggest you use chatgpt to learn these complex formulas as it will help you obtain a better grasp on how these equations function; even I don’t fully know how many of the kinematic equations I used works but I have a basic understanding on it and how to apply it.
