[Update] September 14, 2026
Hi Creators,
Starting today, you can use licensed IP in your game that’s tied to specific game pass and developer product sales, instead of to the entire game. Roblox handles the revenue split with the rights holder automatically on every sale.
We’re also introducing three new Kodansha franchises available to license today.
What In-Game Sales Licensing Covers
An in-game sales license grants you the right to sell items built with licensed IP inside a game. It works via the monetization tools you already use: game passes and developer products.
The rights holder earns a revenue share on the sale of those in-game items only, not on your game’s other revenue. You can review the revenue share, license scope, and content standards set by the rights holder before applying for a license to use the IP.
Please note:
- You can only sell licensed items inside the game the license is scoped to.
- If a license expires or is terminated, you are responsible for removing the licensed items from sale. Players keep what they already bought.
This brings the Licensing platform to two license types, each either perpetual or time-limited:
| License type | What it covers | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Full game license | Building a licensed game | Live |
| In-game sales license | Selling licensed items inside a game | New, live today |
Three New Kodansha IPs
The license catalog is expanding with three new Kodansha franchises:
- FAIRY TAIL: A globally popular fantasy franchise with a long-running manga and anime series.
- Knights of Sidonia: A critically acclaimed science-fiction manga and anime franchise known for distinctive world-building.
- Ghost Encyclopedia: A children’s ghost-story franchise based on a book series and live-action film.
As with all IP, any content inspired by or using it must adhere to our Community Standards . If you’re considering using romantic themes in your content, it must also adhere to the Restricted Content Policy .
How to Get a License
In-game sales licensing is handled inside of the License Manager on Creator Hub:
-
Find the IP you want to work with in the license catalog.
-
Select an available license and review its terms, including revenue share. If you don’t see the license type you’re looking for, it may not be available yet so please check back later.
-
Select an eligible experience and let the rights holder know how you would like to use it, including which game passes and developer products you would like to use the IP with.
-
Add visuals, such as references, mock ups, or sketches, to your pitch.
-
Once the rights holder approves your request, put them on sale in your game.
Revenue is split automatically on every sale at the rate specified in the license.
What’s Next
Later this year, we plan to support licensed assets from IP holders associated with in-game sales. We’re also working on letting rights holders share access-controlled assets, such as images, models, meshes, and music, for licensed creators to use in exchange for a revenue share.

FAQs
What’s the revenue share rate?
- This is the portion of sales revenue that will go to the rights holder. The rights holder sets it and it’s shown in the license terms before you apply. Rates vary by IP.
Do I need a game license first?
- No. You do not need a separate game license for items sold under an in-game sales license.
Can I use this in a game I’ve already built and launched?
- Yes. You don’t need to build a new game from scratch to work with an IP. You can license an IP for an event, a season, or a limited mechanic inside a game you already run.
Can I use licensed IP for in-game subscriptions?
- Not yet, but we are working to continue expanding the options available to you.
What happens to my items if the license ends?
- You are responsible for removing the licensed developer products and game passes from sale when the license ends. Players who already bought them can keep what they bought, and you can continue to support those purchased items working in your game. Any sales after the license ends are not allowed.
Can I get a license for an IP that isn’t listed?
- Not via License Manager. Licenses are published by rights holders. If an IP you want isn’t listed, it isn’t available to license on the platform yet. Please share in the comments any IP that you would like to see added.
Is my request guaranteed to be approved?
- No. The rights holder reviews each application’s proposed use against the content standards and brand guidelines published with the license. Please review those standards and guidelines before you apply to understand what is more likely to get approved, and ensure your pitch to the rights holder helps them understand your plans.
Can I license more than one IP at a time for my game?
- You can have multiple in-game sales licenses for different IPs in your game. However, you cannot combine a full game license for one IP with an in-game sales license for another IP.
