Lighting messed up after new studio updates (4K rendering update)

As of today, February 5th 2026, we noticed that our lighting effects were not rendering properly with these white lines instead of the intended effect. We are unsure when this started happening as we only noticed this today, but we do recall seeing the effect working in January. This occurs both in game and in studio, it also occurs in a 2024 version of the game.

The game I am working on used Futuristic lighting which was changed in an update, but we are using the same set up mentioned in the announcement
20260205_151655s_bqLcY83SXV

This issue occurs when 4K textures are enabled and disabled, so either way this doesn’t fix anything but this may be relevant.

The grass uses SurfaceLights to achieve this effect

Here are some extra screenshots showing what happens with our current set up, notice the visible white outlines.

Expected behavior

This is how the effect is supposed to look. We are using the recommended setup to replicate Future lighting, but it no longer replicates terrain grass and other parts of the game the same way. The grass is supposed to be glowing but this glowing effect is now absent out of nowhere.

Hey @Inkthirsty, can you see the stringy line patterns in the placefile you sent without any changes? I was only able to get the lines to show after increasing the brightness and setting the color to white for all SurfaceLights in the scene:

Apologies for the miscommunication, the white lines were the result of us attempting to fix to the problem and we forgot to revert them when taking the screenshots, that was my fault and I apologise for that.

There is supposed to be a glowing effect in the grass which no longer is present even if you change options. I have made a little diagram showing how it should look vs how it currently looks, let me know if it helps! The screenshot on the left is from another game as we do not have screenshots of the effect working in the game I sent, but the setup is 1:1 and effect no longer works in that game either.

I have attached the other game’s place file here which may be easier to look at - sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks for providing the new comparison shots and placefile. I’m able to reproduce the before (January) glow effect on the grass by tweaking the SurfaceLight properties like before:

I’m still looking into why this effect disappeared recently and will provide an update here soon.

There was a previous bug where SurfaceLights brightness would increase without clamping based on light area. This was fixed and it caused the lights in your place to become much dimmer.

You can simulate the old grass glow effects by selecting all the SurfaceLights (is:SurfaceLight in Explorer or with a command through Command Bar window) in your place and increasing the Brightness, Color, and Range properties. To select only SurfaceLights by their parent model you can use Ancestry search queries (such as LightGrass.LightGrass.SurfaceLight):

Thanks for the report!

We were able to get the glow effect to work again, however, now there are white lines on objects inside of the light area. Do you have a solution to prevent this?

There currently isn’t a good way to exclude parts from lighting. You could try one of methods in here to see if it works for you:
