Looking for feedback on my obby game

So i made this old roblox inspired obby game, and I wanna get some feedback on it Play the game:

Before I begin, I found a few bugs.

Bugs
  1. The face changers at the end do not work.
  2. If you fall, it takes a while for you to die. Not really a bug, but please, put an invisible kill brick so that the players don’t have to fall for eternity.

That’s all: no critical bugs! Nice!

I would do a few adjustments to make it truly 2008.

  1. (edit) Please, change the textures to the retro ones. This is the number one issue. You can find a retro stud material on the toolbox, and then globally assign it as the default stud/plastic material texture via MaterialService.

  2. Mimic the old CoreGui. Replace the player list with a custom, classic one; there are good ones in the toolbox or somewhere on the DevForum - it’d do a massive difference! Same thing, but with the chat box; once again, no need to reinvent the wheel - there are plenty of great solutions. The health bar and the inventory would also need to be custom. You’d also want to add certain aspects that do not exist anymore, such as: the +/-/↑/↓ camera control buttons on the bottom right, the infamous ‘Report’ button, and a couple of buttons on the top right (Fullscreen/Help/Exit/pretty sure there were more). Make sure you disable the modern CoreGui!

p.s: just search up '2006 player list/chat/backpack/health bar on the toolbox…
  1. The player character animations are still smooth and modern. It should be easy to find an Animate script that brings back the old animations. While at it, why not also mimic the old character sounds? Sorry, you already did this. In the scerenshot above, you can see this weird outline on the character: that’s the old ForceField I think! It’d be super cool if you implemented that.

  2. Improve the camera (by improve I mean make it worse xd). The old camera used to be snappy, make snapping sounds, and it’s trajectory when zooming in/out was specific. It also followed your character with a slight delay. Once again, there are a ton of resources for this.

  3. Click to move was a forced feature back then! If you were hovering over a surface with your mouse, there would be a green right directly under it, and clicking would make you move to that spot. You shouldn’t have a problem finding a resource for this (although keep in mind that there wasn’t any pathfinding back then - you’d just move in a straight line).

  4. The lighting is modern. You added a few nice effects it seems like, but the shadows are just too good. You should try disabling the GlobalShadows property in Lighting. Additionally, set LightingStyle to Soft and disable PrioritizeLightingQuality if you haven’t already. This will enable Voxel lighting. You should then look into adding a ColorGradingEffect and set it’s TonemapperPreset to Retro. Doing this will leave you with the Compatibility lighting - a must have for retro games.

  5. Now, it’s starting to get interesting. You should try implementing a custom character controller, or a hacky workaround that would mimic the old physics engine. I found a really good thread with a bunch of tips on this. Sadly, I don’t have much to add here: there’s no way to directly tailor the physics engine to your needs, but if you pull this off, your game will easily be one of the best ones in terms of retro user experience.

  6. Retro Roblox on our modern, huge screens seems truly weird. This one is optional (in case you even consider my feedback xd), but what I would do is make a custom controller that would dynamically put black vertical/horizontal bars on your screen depending on how big it is, and what it would do is adjust the camera’s Field of View to make sure that the aspect ratio/resolution of the viewport (what the player sees) is always the same, no matter what. It would add a TON of immersion and make the retro feeling next level.

  7. Lastly, add a loading screen/main menu GUI that would illustrate the old loading screen, and then maybe transform to your own themed main menu GUI if you’d like, although that’s also optional. Here’s a nice thread.

Thanks for reading! :))

Edits

Edit 1. Turns out you actually added the old character sounds. My bad!
Edit 2. Added point 0. Seriously, please change the textures. Also added a bugs section.
