Map suggestions?

I’m working on a map for a game (very detailed description, I know)

Issue 1:
The map is encased in a circular border, only issue is I can’t think how to make it look nicer

Issue 2:
Because of the art style, there’s a lack of detail opportunities and to make the map look nicer I’d want to add more detail to buildings.
Currently, they look like this.

I feel like there’s something very slightly off, but I can’t quite figure out what. Any suggestions are appreciated

To address the first issue, try adding mountain ranges and if possible, hiding the border. A lot of background cover-up is probably needed for a more appealing look.

The second issue is clearly the repeating style of buildings. The color settings are very, very similar. Perhaps you should add more variations of color palettes on the houses. Additionally, the walls are plain like the 2013 classic homes in town & city genres. Chimneys are optional. Detail around a house should easily make the house blend in the environment.

Here’s a secret on how I do build things, I write some random scenario of what could happen in such particular spot in general, short story maybe. I model to the accuracy of whatever I have written.

Mountain range sounds like it could work, I have a couple part designs that could go nicely. I’ll have a go at that when the border is the next issue.

Shouldn’t clarified they’ll be recoloured, that’s simply an asset pack. They’ll be duplicated and recoloured around the map to flesh it out. Chimneys are something I somehow forgot about, and I’ll have a go adding a couple. I’ve also not got around to decoration yet, so I’ve definitely got to throw together some bushes, driveways, fences and trees.

Thanks for the tips

Try variety of buildings. Skycrapers, school, hospitals, offices or whatever you think fits. You could add details or divide the areas to neighborhoods, industrial areas, etc.
