[NEW POLL] Which gamemodes should I put in my FPS game?

I’m trying to decide what kinda gamemode(s) I should put in my fps game, but I can’t! So I decided to do a poll.

Poll 1:

  • Hacker Simulation
  • Melee-Only
  • Automatics-Only
  • Swift Standoff

I will add more polls as I think of more gamemodes

INFO:

Hacker Simulation: All players can see enemy players through walls. All guns auto reload and have a shorter reload time. Players can double jump and they have boosted run speed and jump power. Players can also walk through certain walls and obstacles, however bullets cannot travel through them.

Melee-Only: All players can only use a random melee weapon each time they spawn. Ranging from a knife or sword, to a lightsaber. Run speed is heavily increased and player’s gain a dash.

Automatics-Only: Only automatic guns allowed! Standard TDM rules apply.

Swift Standoff: Every kill a player gets, their run speed increases. Along with an extra jump each two kills. Run speed caps out at 10 stacks and extra jumps caps out at 4. You lose 2 run stacks when you die and all jump stacks.

Crown: Inspired by the similar game mode from utg (untitled tag game). In this mode, a random player gains the crowned pistol. It has infinite ammo, instant reload, and deals 80 damage body shot and 150 damage headshot. The player holding the gun is highlighted gold and is super visible to all players. The other players in the match have to attempt to kill the player with the crowned pistol (they are armed with a revolver and a knife). The person that has the crowned pistol at the end of the match wins. (Killing the crowned player, grants you the gun and you become the new target)

Heist: Each team has a chest that they need to protect. Once that team’s chest is destroyed, the enemy team now has to collect the gems and bring it back to their chest. If they succeed, that team wins.

Juggernaut: One player is chosen as the Juggernaut, with tons of health and is equipped with a viking axe. The juggernaut wins if he either:

  • Kills all other players.
  • Survives the time limit.

The opposing team wins if:

  • They team up and successfully take down the juggernaut.
  • The juggernaut leaves, disconnects, or dies some other way.

Explosion Circus: Explosive weapons only! Standard TDM rules apply.

INFO: Hacker Simulation is purely for fun and entertainment. I’m not suggesting or hinting that people should actually exploit!

I absolutely love these game modes for an FPS game. Not too original, but great nonetheless! I chose the hacker simulation because I feel like it would be more… intense.

If you choose, are you able to send the link to your game so that I can try it out and make some game mode suggestions for your game based on how I see it?

I can post the link. But basically just think of Arsenal that is a little inspired by classic Roblox and is more arcade-like.

I’ll do my best to give feedback on each idea you had

Hacker Simulation
This idea has the biggest room for growth and creativity, so it could be successful or fail based on what mechanics and features it brings to the players! Certainly something you won’t get right the first time around and will need to be improved based off player feedback.

Melee-Only
Could be cool but likely in a situation where player’s mobility is greatly increased, otherwise melee-only usually isn’t popular in shooters and get’s overlooked 99% of the time.

Automatics-Only
I feel like no matter what this should be a mode included in the game! It’s likely to be one of the most chosen modes due to its simplicity.

Swift Standoff
This could be really cool with tweaks and again, will likely need improvement from feedback. It seems too linear for me. I would suggest maybe adding where when you die, your speed and jump goes down by 1 if applicable! With the right weapons + map layout, this mode could be a great one!

Thanks for such a detailed reply! I edited Swift Standoff and Melee-Only a bit with some extra features.

You could add a game mode similar to laser tag or a game mode where players not only fight each other but also have to stop a zombie invasion or other monsters. If your game has players in teams, you could create a FFA mode.
Hope this helps!

I don’t plan to add PvE. It mostly going to be PvP. But I like your FFA idea! Thanks for replying!

[BUMP] New poll with two new gamemodes.

The only one that stands out to me is melee only.

Its one of 4 to not have a name that sounds straight out of ChatGPT, and it’s the only proper skill-based one.

  • Hacker Simulation: It’s just a plain unfair idea, and I’d argue it’s only a good gamemode if you want to kill playerbase and servers.
There’s already a few games which do this, and no doubt you’re probably looking at them, but the second someone actually skilled at shooters joins, everything just gets one-sided to them and everyone else leaves. All it takes is ONE player to make everyone else upset.

  • Melee-Only: Seems like the only fun one given the RNG element is removed. Maybe do gun game but with melee only?
This is a gamemode that Arsenal has, and I’d argue its one of the more enjoyable ones since its a lot more skill based.

  • Swift Standoff: I would have said this one was good if it wouldn’t get very one-sided after a minute.
What I mean by this is that once a few players on the same team have max buffs, if they play correctly they’ll essentially be unkillable. The fight would be one-sided to that team.

  • Automatics-Only: Spray and pray, no skill. There’s a reason this is one of the most hated gamemodes in arsenal from what I’ve seen.
I personally have no problems with Automatics-Only, but I do see why its disliked by a lot.

Basically, a lot of these ideas just wouldn’t be that good in practice. The concepts are sub-par at best.

My best advice if you’re making a shooter is just to look at what other real shooters are doing/have done.

I’m personally taking inspiration from some of Team Fortress 2’s gamemodes for my shooter, as well as other games. I’m not trying to re-invent the wheel.

I understand your comment and suggestion. But a lot of these modes are LTMs (Limited Time Modes), they most likely won’t stay in the game. Unless, I decide to put them in my Arcade Lobby. I’ve done that with my most recent gamemode, “One-In-The-Chamber.” I understand how this gamemode can get ruined by a squad of players who actually know how to play, but this gamemode isn’t going to be super reoccurring and it definitely won’t stay in the game. Maybe once every April Fools or Christmas it will return as a LTM again, or something like that. This is what Rivals did. So these concerns:

Would not happen as the gamemode would only be in the game for a few days to a week, and then get removed. It’s just a casual goofy gamemode for players to mess around in. Like how BedWars did their “Kit Fusion” LTM where you could fuse overpowered kits to make an unstoppable buggy force. But again, it was an LTM and it was super casual and led to some crazy combinations.

I actually really like this idea of a gun game/melee-only hybrid. Adds some meaning to the gamemode inside of just slash and dash and hope you get a kill or two.

I do agree with this. But this doesn’t make them “unkillable.” It doesn’t give them any health boost or damage buffs, just purely movement. All it takes is for the team of players to target one of the maxed-out players and kill them, which basically puts them back at zero. Maybe I’ll add some sort of extra protection as well.

Reloading exists. This is also a super casual mode that anyone can hop into for a bit, and hop out.

Thanks for the detailed reply!

Hey everyone! Please make sure to vote on all polls

This helps be decide on more gamemodes.

I’ve thought of a few game modes you could add:

  • Team Deathmatch: Two teams compete against each other. The team with the most kills at the end of the round wins.

  • Gun Game: Gun Game mode is a FFA mode. The more kills a player makes, the better weapons they receive. The player with the most kills at the end of the round wins.

  • Looter Shooter: When a player is killed, they drop loot that other players can collect.

  • King of the Hill: There are two teams trying to conquer a zone.

  • Double Teams: Instead of two teams, there are four teams.

  • Assassin: This mode is a FFA mode. Each player is assigned a target to kill. If you kill that target, you receive a new target. If you die, you go to the lobby or have to spectate.

  • Secret Juggernaut: There is a Juggernaut among all the players, but the players have to figure out who it is. The Juggernaut does his job normally.

  • Team Swap (inspired by Untitled Tag Game): There are two teams. If a player is killed, they automatically switch to the other team. The goal is for one team to have all players on their side.

  • Weapon Rotation (inspired by Arsenal): Every few seconds, all players’ weapons change to a random weapon. To level the playing field, all players’ weapons always change to the same weapon, so everyone has the same weapon.

I hope there are some ideas here that help you!

My game is entirely based on TDM. It’s the most common gamemode.

But thanks for the suggestions!
