Normals for water terrain

Greetings,

The other day I was wondering if you could make a part (or mesh) follow the movement of the waves in the water terrain.
I tried using rays, casted onto the water, to get the normal, which worked on normal terrain, but gave me however a straight-up facing normal for the water.
So my question is, would there be any way to get the normals of these waves, or is there a workaround, and why don’t the waves give normals like the normal terrain does, using rays?

In my opinion, no.

You could use physics, if that works.

The waves are an animation, not that it actually changes the mesh of the water.
Otherwise, if it actually changes the mesh, I think it will cause lag.
