Other characters get desynced when parented outside of Workspace locally and back in

On the client, we re-parent other player’s characters to ServerStorage (or anywhere outside of Workspace) to hide them in certain contexts. However, a recent Roblox change seems to be only sending relative differences (e.g. moved left) rather than the character’s absolute position.

Expected behavior

The position of the character is properly updated when re-parented to Workspace, rather than being offset by the distance.

Just to bump this, we are experiencing this same issue!
I messaged staff on the community feedback program about it. Just in case it was some weird thing they enrolled me in.
Glad to see its not just me!

We started seeing this yesterday in our experiences.

Thank you for the report! Can you provide place files here (or via DMs) and/or published placeIDs so I can do some debugging! Thanks!

The place ID I am having issues with is: 12068411700
This is a sub place however. As our main place is just a lobby

I think I just bound you to a channel with some changes we suspect may have caused things. Will you try in a few minutes (after restarting) and see if things are fixed? I am also still investigating.

Here are two that use similar tech regarding this issue: 14230662527, 13621938427

Reproduction steps:

  • Start 2 Player Server Test
  • On client 1, re-parent the other player’s character outside of Workspace
  • On client 2, move around some
  • On client 1, re-parent back to workspace
  • On client 2, move/jump around - you are de-synced on client 1’s screen completely. You used to snap back into place when the humanoid state changed.

To also note, I’m on zcontrol and this is occurring in live servers.

Thank you for the detailed post! I think I have confirmed the problematic change. I am rolling it back. Note I am doing a 1 hour rollout, since its not my change and I don’t know how safe it is to immediately revert. Things should be fixed within an hour, apologies for the inconvenience!

Ok all - the rollout is complete, so hopefully it is fixed for everyone. Thanks again, and please let us know if the issue persists!

Thank you, this seems to be working in our experience now!

Some select players seem to still experience this issue, is it possible that they may just be on outdated clients? It’s working fine for the vast majority of users.
