I would like the game I’m making to be Paid Access in Local Currency. Right now, there is no way to add people to paid access games without granting them the full developer role and edit permissions for the place.
I have a few cases where I would like to be able to grant people access to the game:
I have QA testers and would like for them to be able to play the game.
I want to add a moderator to the game with an in-game admin console to support them
Granting access to specific youtubers / creating a giveaway for them in order to generate hype for the game.
Not being able to address these, I can create a separate QA experience on roblox, but then I have to either open it to the public or community members. In both cases players can join the game who haven’t paid and who are not helping me run QA tests though and I have to implement my own player filter.
I think cases 1/2 would benefit from a temporary access solution such as group roles and access to experiences. I think case 3 should have a more permanent access solution similar to steam keys.
Learned of a solution to problems 1/2. If you go into studio and go to the ManageCollaborators page, you can grant a role access to one specific game. This also makes #3 feasible albeit more work. I’m going to leave this up though because I think there could be a benefit from an easier way to make giveaways happen.
EDIT - This actually does nothing for paid access in local currency games. Not sure if this should be converted into a bug report now, but I tried with both the new and legacy role system and appear to be unable to allow specific players to play the game.
If it’s intentional that Play permissions don’t grant players access to the game automatically, there needs to be an additional setting in role permissions to bypass the purchase. I think it’s understandable that certain groups may want to grant group members access to the game but still require them purchase it, but for my use-case this behavior is pointless.
I’m starting to prepare to market my game within the next month and a half and I expect the youtuber issue to become a larger pain point since it appears the only way for me to grant access is to reimburse people and actively lose money.
Hey, exciting news, this is now supported. If you give playtest permission, it will bypass the need for those testers to pay for the game. This is for both fiat currency and Robux paid access.
