We launched Emissive Maps earlier this year, letting creators light up games with glowing effects. Now we’re bringing that same capability to UGC avatar items!
If you want to be among the first creators to build in this new category, apply here by September 16th.
Get Early Access and Help Shape the Tools
This pilot program gives you early access to test and shape the new creation flow. You can build in this category early and be among the first to publish and sell on the Marketplace.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the pilot program, creators must meet the following criteria:
IDV and active Roblox Plus subscribers
Clean moderation history with no actions taken in the past 12 months
Clean DMCA history
At least one item published on the Marketplace in the past 30 days
Application review: Applications are reviewed on a first come, first served basis. Once we’ve reached capacity, the application will close. You’ll be notified via DevForum if you have been selected.
Selection criteria: To be eligible, creators must meet our creator requirements for uploading and publishing 3D content and have abided by our Marketplace policies in the past.
Upload first, publish shortly after: If you’re accepted in the first few days of the pilot, you’ll be able to upload Emissive items right away but not publish them for sale yet. We’ll notify accepted creators directly once publishing is enabled.
What’s Next
In the coming months, we plan to open up publishing and selling Emissive items to all creators as a way to expand self-expression on Roblox.
Let us know if you have any questions or feedback. Thank you.
Good luck to everyone! Hopefully this time you guys will pick different creators instead of the same few ones.
No shade to those creators, I know a bunch of them and they are amazing! But at the same time letting new people in would be nice to let everyone have a chance :,)
Thank god the price is 5x higher if an item has emissions. This makes me feel so much more confident that this won’t completely explode the market.
However, seeing another closed ugc program is a bit upsetting. Especially if it will stay closed for months. I applied again; if I get in, cool; if not, no issues on my end. Though I hope more people get accepted into this program, and applicants are more thoroughly looked into.
I’m sick and tired of these pilot programs giving the same people a monopoly over brand new marketplace categories for literal months. I’ve seen creators earn millions of robux a month all because they’ve been given special treatment. There’s absolutely no reason that a 2D image texture needs an entire pilot and months of exclusivity. These categories need to start being opened to the public. People have been preparing for these categories for months just to be denied at launch.
I don’t really have an initiative to apply since the same nepo kids end up getting in instead, BUT can you all further explain what you mean by “clean dmca history”? Do Roblox sent dmcas apply? Or do you mean takedowns sent by other users only.
I’m interested in this as I have a few items with emissive maps already made and awaiting upload, but I have a question - It mentions clean DMCA history, is there a fair chance I could still be accepted if I received one accidental DMCA 3+ years ago?
This is a really exciting next step for avatar creation and the Marketplace.
Bringing emissive capabilities to avatar items opens up a new range of creative possibilities for creators, particularly across fashion, fantasy, futuristic design, character customization, and more expressive visual styles.
I also think launching this through a pilot is a strong approach. Giving a smaller group of eligible creators early access provides an opportunity to gather meaningful feedback, identify workflow improvements, and help ensure the broader publishing experience is reliable before expanding access more widely.
The eligibility requirements also seem appropriate for an early access program of this type. Maintaining strong moderation, intellectual property, and Marketplace standards is important as new creation capabilities are introduced.
It will be especially interesting to see how emissive items are used alongside existing avatar technologies such as R15, Rthro, layered clothing, and dynamic heads. As these systems continue to evolve together, creators will have even more flexibility to build distinctive and expressive avatar identities.
Looking forward to seeing what the community creates during the pilot and how this capability develops ahead of the wider rollout.
I do want to make another point regarding this and Free Limited UGC.
If a user makes free emissive ugc, the stock price should be 5x higher as well. Since the average price of this ugc will be 300-800 Robux per type. Free UGC will need to cost 500 Robux stock to match. If not people will abuse the low cost for free ugc spam.
