I wish the engineers were a bit more transparent about their reasonings. It reads a lot to me like implementing support for this would interfere with some other thing in the engine or that they’re working on, but they won’t disclose any specifics, which leaves us to blindly guess…
I’m hoping it’s at least marked somewhere internally as a feature to add in the future, even if the priority is low.
Perhaps if one of us makes a truly popular game with this artstyle, it may motivate them to implement it. Who knows!

its a bit weird because MaterialVariant and SurfaceAppearance in the C++ code of Roblox do not share the same “parent” class, so the behaviour isn’t shared between them 1:1 unfortunately.
