Hello everyone!

Just today I was working on my Roblox game and realized I missed the old textures, so I decided to switch them to the Pre2022 ones. Great, my game looks so much better… or does it?! I’ve slowly realized that when I’m using Pre2022 materials on roblox everything looks a little… low quality and fuzzy. This is especially noticeable for small parts, certain lighting environments, and if you’re like me set your StudsPerTile really high (I like the look of a miniature game environment, ok?!).

If you can’t tell already, there’s a solution to this problem. Oh, and I MADE IT!!!

:package: What is Included (and Excluded)

  • Includes 14 MaterialVariant versions of each texture (rendering up to full 4K resolution depending on your device). Names listed below.
  • Excluded materials: Foil, Glass, Ice, and Metal were left out. Their raw legacy color sheets are virtually identical to the current Roblox versions. Only the 14 textures that actually changed over time were upscaled.

:gear: How to Setup

Copy the MaterialVariants from Workspace.COPYME into MaterialService. If you downloaded the express option just right click on MaterialService then hover over Insert and then clickInsert Roblox Model then select the .rbxm file you’ve downloaded earlier.

:hammer_and_wrench: Troubleshooting (If you see no change):

  • Make sure there are no other MaterialVariants with the same name.
  • Check that the MaterialVariant property of your Part is either blank or explicitly set to the specific material name.

To be completely honest, most of these don’t look the best yet, and some turned out pretty horrible! This is a work in progress, and I plan to improve them over time.

Because I don’t really care about something my own computer will struggle running at 60 FPS on a damn 1920x1080 monitor, not to mention 99% of users being unable to run it completely.
Roblox as of now does not let you downscale textures meaningfully
Yes, you can write your own downscaling algorithm, but as far as I remember, you are unable to generate materials in runtime (unless inserted as a model), and the user will be forced into downloading the original 4K copy, increasing load time

Firstly, AI was used.

Secondly, 90% of the charm of the older textures is that the resolution is bad. The reason people use them is because of how they look. You change how they look and they just aren’t what people want. If people want HD textures they’d use the 2022 materials.

Thirdly, primarily due to AI, these absolutely fail at recreating what they were based off.
The AI noise makes the textures look awful, and its completely failed at getting any amount of the normals correct. Grass looks more like a rock surface and cobblestone is beyond flat when compared to the original.
In the few cases where the textures do look at least similar if not barely altered, the normals completely ruin them.
Then, there’s some textures where the AI has utterly and completely failed at recreating them entirely. Wood Planks, Slate, Corroded Metal, Concrete, Granite, and again, Cobblestone, all look entirely different to the originals.

I would be uploading images but I get nothing but errors when trying, but point is, these are awful. They fail at doing what they were intended to while looking bad while also using AI while also missing the entire point as to why people use the original textures to begin with.

Sorry. I didn’t really know how to do normals and I mainly wanted to just have diamond plate but then I added more because i thought it would be pretty useless for just one texture. And also the 2022 textures look even worse like grass and diamond plate and a couple more from 2022 are probably worse than mine. But that’s besides the point and also my main reason in doing this was helping the community but yes I do really agree my attempt at this was like horrible. I don’t really know how to close this post so I guess I’m just leaving it open. Sorry guys, maybe I’ll make a better attempt at this later. Also imo local ai isn’t even that bad I used it for 20 texture and any modern game on medium graphics probably is more harmful to the environment than upscaling 20 textures on my local setup.
