Promotional Notifications for Games
It’s not common for Paid Access games to heavily promote updates or large changes.
This is probably partly because it’s difficult for these games to be noticed if their popularity drops off.
For instance, the Top Paid game ever, “Wheel of Fortune” by AlexNewtron, has had 130k+ purchases.
Right now, less than 50 people are playing (compared to approximately 700 on the most popular game right now).
Even if “Wheel of Fortune” was substantially extended or improved, very few users would see it.
This last week, 13.9k visits were recorded there. If somehow all of these were unique (which I think is
very, very unlikely) only 10% of players have played the game they bought in the last week. This is despite
the fact that the game was updated last week.
This is probably just because players forget.
ROBLOX isn’t like other distribution platforms like Steam, because you don’t collect a “library” of games to
play – you just join one from the ever larger global collection of popular ROBLOX places.
If games could send notifications to users of updates, then games players were interested in but forgot about
would be able to re-captivate their players.
Proposal:
Place creators should be able to push notifications (possibly as a tab in “Messages” or possibly as its own
thing) to players of their games so that players get reminded about games they like and their development.
Proposed Limitations:
- Creators can’t send out more than one message every, say, week. (Perhaps they can “update” them in case of
typos / new updates in a way that wouldn’t re-notify players) - Players can unsubscribe from any particular place, so that they will not get notifications again from them
- Players are only subscribed automatically to messages for Paid Access games. (Maybe an explicit Subscribe
button would be available on all games that want to use this feature)
