Hi Creators,
Your unique creative work deserves protection on Marketplace. To protect the time and energy you put into making original 3D items, we’ve removed 3D Marketplace items that contained meshes, textures, or animation data that were overly similar copies of previously uploaded content. Moving forward, updated checks will also make it harder for overly similar copy items to be published.
What Happens to Items Already on Marketplace
Some of these items have been on the Marketplace for a while, we’re minimizing friction for assets that were previously published:
- No account strikes or penalties: We won’t issue account strikes or moderation penalties for items removed under this update.
- Item removals: We may remove published items that contain meshes, textures, or animation data that are overly similar copies of previously published items, under the general creation guidelines of the Marketplace policy.
- Notifications: If we remove one of your published items with this update, you’ll receive a notification via system messages and the taken down items will be greyed out in the Creator Dashboard.
- Upload and publishing fees: We won’t refund any upload or publishing fees for items removed for violating policy.
For future uploads, attempts to publish spam, including overly similar items to published items, to Marketplace and violate the Community Standards against Repetitive & Misleading Content may result in account suspensions.
What Happens to Purchased Items
We’re also supporting players who purchased removed items.
- Removed items: We’ll remove these items from user inventories.
- Full refunds: Roblox will automatically issue full Robux refunds to buyers within seven business days.
- User notifications: Impacted users will receive a direct message in their Roblox Inbox explaining the removal and refund process.
Appeals Process
If you believe an item was incorrectly removed, you can file an appeal.
Account and Community Workflows
We know many creators work across multiple accounts or Communities. To support those workflows, we won’t flag items as overly similar in these cases:
- The same user uploaded and/or published both items.
- Both items are published in the same Community (even if done by different users).
- One item is published by a user, and the other is published by a Community where that user (at detection time) has permission to create or manage avatar items in the Community.
These exceptions don’t apply if one asset is a Limited and the other isn’t. That remains a Marketplace policy violation.
When possible, we recommend uploading item variants under a single account or through one of the workflows above to help avoid publishing issues.
Looking Ahead
This is an important step toward building a Marketplace that better supports original content and the creators behind it. Over time, we plan to expand these detection models to cover additional Marketplace item types.

How do I know if my item is an original or overly similar? How do I prevent myself from making items detected as overly similar to others moving forward?
- Please refer to our Marketplace Policy page for more information on creating avatar items. We encourage creators to prioritize original and novel creative designs.When using templates or simple designs (e.g. solid textures, downloaded templates for 3D item meshes etc.), ensure your version includes clear, distinctive changes that set it apart from the source design.
Will I be moderated if my currently published items on Marketplace are taken down?
- We won’t ban users for existing items in the Marketplace that are marked as overly similar. Moving forward, uploading items deemed overly similar may result in moderation.
Many creators rely on templates eg: face mask. Will these items be flagged?
- No, we look at the combination of mesh plus texture. For instance, a face mask mesh template with a unique face would not be considered similar. However, multiple creators uploading the same mesh + texture with minimal change would be moderated.
Doesn’t this break In-Experience Creation (IEC)?
- We are aware that in-experience items may be similar or even identical to each other due to how they are set up. This is accounted for in our copy protection logic. Please note that using in-experience creation to violate marketplace policies (including by copying or creation of Marketplace items) will still be moderated.
