I prefer it to stay public but lower the fees and much slower (and manual) moderation. Basically pre-2024 UGC catalog but open.
I had to wait an entire day or two to get my accessory pass moderation. By that I knew the moderation was manual rather than current automatic
The fees that were updated for the preparation for public UGC are very high; it has killed the idea of being able to make own events with free UGCs by increasing the fee to 100 robux per stock.
Before public UGC, it was 10 robux for face accessories, 20 for hats and 30 for back accessories.
I’d be willing to bet money that these items are infringing and should be taken down, but based on my (limited) understanding, it’s Nickelodeon’s burden to protect their own IP, not Roblox’s :-/
This seems like a great idea. I hope this reduces the bloat of copycat items in the marketplace. I hope this also applies to “fake limited copies” that some users have mistakenly bought in the past. I’ve reported several of these in the past, some even use very deceiving techniques, like uploading UGC from a Group whose name is very similar to “Roblox”, tricking users into buying fake items.
This is really great update. There are hundreds of copies of my assets, and one of my accessories alone has 42 copies. I really hope they can all be removed!
You state that you have “removed” content of this nature already due to this however this is still a very rampant issue on the catalog and there are many groups that have stolen items in mass that had less than 20% of their stolen property deleted. Two examples I just found while writing this post are Nesmetic and Xanto Store which are both comprised purely of stolen creator assets. Some of their items were purged recently but it was far from a complete wipe of these stolen assets, here are some easy examples that have been left up:
The list goes on with every asset in both of these groups as well of dozens of others, between just the 2 I have linked here there are over 1500 stolen items, and believe me there are plenty of worse offenders.
Even assets of mine that were stolen still exist here and yet my DMCA against the asset in question was denied because automated systems determined it was apparently “unclear that it was stolen” despite the mesh being ripped 1:1 except the uv layout being rotated 180 degrees, the only differences with the texture is that unused parts of the UV were coloured over with black and it was again flipped 180 degrees.
I appreciate that something is finally being done about the issue but I hope a lot more is in the works for dealing with it as it is definitely not a solved problem, and it is really demotivating as a creator to work making items just for them to get stolen if it gets any kind of success.
And for this specific case:
Let’s say someone made a UGC for themselves and put it on their profile, but they don’t have plus or anything. What if someone asks that creator if they can re-upload the same UGC, since they don’t plan to sell it, and they say “okay”. How will the system know that they granted it.
Although this is a very silly case, but I wouldn’t ever consider it impossible. Or basically off-sale items. I asked people around Roblox, asking them what they do if something is off-sale, such as a Classic Shirt or maybe something simple else (not limiteds). And they just say, that they just consider re-uploading it.
It wouldn’t know they granted the rights to the model or texture, these are cases where it’d flag them as duplicates and lead to a ban, which is why this update probably needs more thought put into it rather than assuming every similar item is an unauthorized copy
A couple weeks ago around 20,000 items were deleted due to being copies of other assets and by their wording of “We’ve removed 3D Marketplace items that duplicate existing meshes, textures, or animation data. This protects your original work and keeps catalog quality high.” I’m led to believe they are referring to that, yet that wave clearly did not solve the problem as most of these groups have only been mildly hit (about 20% of most of them) and work is still clearly yet to be done against the rest of these items.
The only way I think you can solve this issue is to have the person that owns the UGC you are reuploading, to join your Community, then give them avatar item permissions, after that you can then safely upload it as the Community, and it will not delete it since that very user you are reuploading UGC from is in your group with permissions.
Since Roblox said they will only do detections at the moment of upload, maybe afterwards the original creator can always leave the group? since now the Community is safe to reupload it again anytime because the item is now uploaded under the Community if what I’m thinking is correct.
The only way I can see this being a problem is if Roblox detects the original creator leaving the group and moderates any further reuploads to the Community because the original creator has left. And I don’t think you can upload it as a user, Roblox will have no way to tell you got the permission to.
good update overall. although i do think it should be up to the original uploader IF the potential copy should be removed and moderated. some creators may reupload from their alts
You guys should start protecting your own limiteds or at least limit which creators are selected to be able to upload UGCs.
I’m not saying you should add the old “private” program, but at least make it so hard for alts, bots, and scammers to even be able to upload UGCs in the first place.
so does this mean that, for example if two separate people have the same item uploaded under their accounts, but offsale (i.e. an accessory free to upload and privately use by everyone) as a personal item, does this mean roblox will still take down every upload of that accessory except for the very first one?
