Questions for experienced devs

Hello my name is ant. I recently started building but whenever I build I try to make modern stuff but it doesn’t work out to well. It always ends up being super plain not looking modern at all. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions how to accomplish my designs to look modern?

Now I’m probably not the best person to ask for modern stuff, as my area of expertise is sci-fi. But my suggestion is have a lot of glass windows - for that super-modern look you’ll basically want a solid frame (something like white plastic) and glass windows filling the gaps. Then you can add extra parts to that frame (try to experiment with angles and unique shapes), and an indented layer within the frame connecting to the windows, for extra detailing. When you want a solid block, use gray concrete or similar, and try to add some kind of detail to it (markings, stripes, some kind of ventilation block, your choice)

Hey man really good question!

Sincerely I think the best you can do is get some friends that have been building for some time and get some feedback or ideas form them. You could also look at YouTube videos on famous developers and you will learn soon enough. You can even look at what they’ve done and replicate their builds using their references.

You should use Btools!

I use btools for
More advanced and harder builds!

What does btools mean? In the olden days it meant the classic hammer/wand/dragger/tape measure tools, but nobody builds that way anymore.

Building tools by f3x is a plugin that allows you to do things easier such as welding putting textures and others.

I currently use it only for resizing lots of parts at once since it doesn’t size them in every axis like the current draggers do.

Ah, I’ve never heard it called that. Thanks!

I would always start small and basic try to not think you’ll accomplish a modern architecture theme from the start it may look plain and bland at the beginning, but overtime you’ll improve and achieve that modern structure and detailed looks. Have you find the correct color pallet, material selection, a layout on how you want it to look like?

Try to gather reference images of different designs that feature modern styles play around with them, see what you like and things you could possibly improve. Once you get the basics down you’ll learn if you keep practicing have you considered using images of the things your creating.

Have a few reference images of real life architecture objects. I’ll search for things you could create in a modern style “e.g. small houses, items". Personally buildings normally feature simplicity, styles and unique types of shapes natural textures and a design layout. I’ll do a bit of research on the modern shapes and ways to achieve a natural look. Take this with a grain of salt.

Maybe try having some reference pictures and base your builds off them as you build? Just a thought :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m not the best builder, but for general building I recommend using these plugins:

Well when it comes to designing realistic and modern things, I suggest using a reference image as a starting place. Small details are key, however, modern builds are a bit harder due to their overly simplistic concepts. Try to think in the mindset of realism (take into consideration real-life aspects like gravity, size, etc.) Everything should flow together smoothly if you wish to have a uniform build. Sorry, this post is a little scattered in terms of tips and etc, however, it’s just some tips you could possibly take into consideration when building/modeling. Keep up the work, I love to see new developers coming to the platform!

Modern stuff are very plain and minimalistic, so making them look good in Roblox would be tasking to do.

I suggest using textures to best accomplish this, most of all try to perfect your lighting. As far as ‘build quality,’ goes, there’s not a lot you can do. Lighting + texturing is your best bet to making things look good as far as a modern aesthetic goes.

I don’t have the tag “Builder” yet, but i have 3 years experience with building, if you want to design and make smooth and detailed modern architecture i would start by planning out on a sheet of paper, then progressing to when you are building, most realistic builds come with shade colors such as black, white and grey, to boost its realism add lots of detail to the areas that would be seen by people when they play and see what you made.

Look at Google images of modern buildings or whatever you like to build in a modern style. Try rebuilding them to learn how they are constructed and then try to make your own modern building. What about adding some images of buildings you made, so we can give you some feedback on them? :slightly_smiling_face:
