Just wanted some quick feedback on this little portion I’ve created to test out lighting. Heavily inspired by the film “Akira” from 1988. All feedback is welcome and appreciated.
it’s too bright also i don’t think the building colors should be like that
It’s over excessive. Tone down the brightness and take inspiration from real night time sights.
I can turn down the brightness, however, I want this build to look a lot like the film Akira as I said before:
I understand the brightness, but I should’ve specified on my side that this is what I’m going for.
the buildings in the picture are not as bright as the one in your picture
I think to achieve that effect on the buildings you can either make the lights smaller but in more quantity OR the better approach imo is to probably use a gradient/image texture that glows (idk how, never tried it before) and paste it onto the buildings.
For the texture, probably just grab a building texture (extra points if its a brightness map), edit it somewhere to add a gradient to make it brighter on the bottom and then tweak the colors.
I like the idea of using a gradient image but already the build is some 50k parts of just regular skyscrapers not including smaller buildings and industry. I will for sure try this but I’m not feeling too hot about adding images to this amount of buildings.
also the white lights on the buildings on the picture are barely visible/not as bright, and the yellow gradients are only visible on the bottom, your building has it all over the whole city
if you’re not scared of having immense lag and want a game that’s as detailed as midnight tokyo then you should go for it, also 50k parts is a LOT ( you don’t need that many windows in every building. )
If your player wont see much of the city, you can probably get away with placing high res images on the sides of the buildings the player WILL or CAN see and some lower res or no images at all on the sides the player wont be able to see
To reply to your 2 comments:
1: I’m going to attempt to turn down the brightness. I’m gonna take NotAx2’s advice and make the parts smaller
2: I know that 50k is a lot already, I’m going to try to replicate the picture that I replied with where the smaller buildings have less lighting than the larger ones to also see if I can create sort of an exaggeration effect as I want this build to have elements of grand-ness.
Alright, take 2.
- Turned down the brightness and made the light parts smaller (suggested by NotAx2)
- More lights are added on larger buildings further back for effect and to draw the eyes, as well as performance reasons.
This night-time city build looks VERY GOOD! The lights are way too bright in my opinion though. Otherwise, great job on this! It looks cool! How long did it take for you to make this city?
For the entire build if condensed into hours, its probably been close to 140 hours. Lighting was probably around 2 or 3 of those.
