Hello everyone!
Today, we’re excited to release RBWR 2.1.0, the Zone A Update, the first major update post 2.0!
Following the release of RBWR 2.0, our team immediately shifted focus to continuing the game’s modernization. While 2.0 brought major foundational changes to the game, there were still many areas of the plant that no longer met the visual and quality standards we have set for RBWR moving forward.
This update delivers a complete overhaul of Zone A, including a full redesign of the facility lobby, main hallways, and numerous miscellaneous areas throughout the zone. While this update may not introduce major new gameplay mechanics, it’s an important step in continuing the modernization of RBWR for years to come.
This update is not part of the Overhaul Series, which will continue and finish in the next update.

Zone A Revamp
We have completely rebuilt and refreshed major areas across the map!
- Completely redesigned lobby with a more lore-accurate appearance, improved lighting, and a stronger first impression for new and returning players.
- Rebuilt all hallways throughout Zone A, featuring updated architecture, higher-quality detailing, optimization, and improved visual consistency.
- Minor refreshes to Unit 01 and Unit 02 Control Rooms, redesigned rooms, updated models, cleaner visuals, and a ton of optimization!
- Dozens of miscellaneous areas modernized, replacing outdated assets and ensuring the entirety of Zone A matches the quality standards established in RBWR 2.0.
- Improved atmosphere across the entire zone, with enhanced lighting, materials, and environmental details to create a more realistic and visually consistent facility.
New Unit 02 Gauges
We have completely rebuilt and refreshed major areas across the map!
- All Unit 02 gauges have been upgraded across the facility, including areas such as TCR, FWP, CMCR, and other Unit 02-specific locations.
- Completely remade gauge models provide a cleaner, more detailed, and more realistic appearance throughout the plant.
- Improved optimization means the new gauges not only look better, but also perform better—making this a win-win for both visuals and performance.
- Please note: The Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) Building still uses the previous gauges. That’s intentional. We have much bigger plans for that area in the next major update.
RBMK Rework
Revamped RBMK reactor mode, featured in both units!
- Drum Level replaces Water Level
- Recirculation flow is now required for reactor cooling
- New meltdown mechanics tied to insufficient recirculation
- New gauges for reactor overheating and steam quality
- Steam quality now affects turbine efficiency
- Updated protection logic during turbine trip conditions
RBMK Rework Additional Details
Drum Level
- RBMK mode now uses Drum Level instead of a traditional water level. This better represents how real RBMK reactors monitor water inventory, as the reactor channels contain a mixture of water and steam rather than a single water level.
Recirculation Cooling
- Reactor cooling now depends on recirculation flow. As reactor power increases, operators must provide more recirculation flow to safely remove heat from the core.
Meltdown Mechanics
- Operating with insufficient recirculation can now lead to overheating and, if left unchecked, a reactor meltdown.
New Instrumentation
- Additional gauges have been added to monitor reactor overheating and steam quality, providing operators with better awareness of reactor conditions.
Steam Quality
- Steam quality now directly impacts turbine efficiency. It is calculated using the reactor’s hidden water inventory, steam content, and water expansion to more accurately simulate real RBMK operation.
Protection Logic
- When operating in RBMK mode, reactor protection will automatically disable whenever the turbine is not synchronized to the grid. This allows recirculation pumps to remain powered during trip conditions, matching the intended operating procedure.
Revamped Onboarding/Tutorial System
The most advanced tutorial system in the genre!
- New players now spawn in the lobby until onboarding is completed.
- Improved Site Tour with better guidance and dialogue flow. An NPC will now walk you through the facility!
- Unit 01 Startup Tutorial has been significantly improved with new safeguards and quality-of-life changes.
- Designed to create a smoother first-time player experience and improve new player retention.
Onboarding System Additional Details
Lobby Spawn
- Players who have not yet completed the tutorial will now spawn directly in the lobby, creating a more intuitive starting point.
Improved Site Tour
- Players who have not completed the facility tour will now be guided to it with a directional arrow.
Reworked Unit 01 Startup Tutorial
- Players can now begin the startup tutorial by interacting with a Proximity Prompt inside Unit 01.
- A 5-second delay has been added between dialogue progression to encourage players to read the instructions instead of rapidly clicking through them.
- Multiple safeguards have been added to improve completion rates, including:
- Automatic annunciator acknowledgements.
- Important values such as pressure and turbine RPM are clamped when necessary.
- Players can only interact with the controls currently highlighted by the tutorial, preventing accidental mistakes.
Why These Changes?
- These improvements create a much smoother onboarding experience for first-time players while helping them build confidence before entering public servers. Our goal is to increase Day 1 player retention and ensure new operators arrive with a stronger understanding of the facility.

New Update Schedule
With the release of 2.1.0, we’re also introducing a new goal for our approach to development moving forward.
Rather than spacing major updates sometimes 7, 8, or 9+ months apart, we plan to release one major content update each season: Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. This approach allows us to deliver meaningful improvements more consistently while keeping development focused and sustainable.
While plans can always change and quality will always come before deadlines, our goal is to give the community a steady stream of new content, improvements, and features throughout the year.
As always, we’d rather delay an update than rush something unfinished. But we’re excited to move toward a more predictable and consistent release cadence for RBWR.
Closing Remarks
As always, we want to thank everyone who continues to support RBWR, whether you’ve been with us for years or just joined the community. Every update is made possible by the feedback, patience, and enthusiasm of our players.
We’re far from finished. With even larger projects already in development, we’re excited to continue expanding and improving the facility in the months ahead.
Thank you for being part of the journey!
