I’ve completed a first version of my latest plugin, Stravant - Redupe. This plugin allows you to create arrays of duplicates of an object by dragging handles.
Evenly offset copies (for the other kind of stairs)
Add rotation between copies
Combine it all for some fun results
Assorted Notes
Redupe does not show up in the same shared “GeomTools” toolbar my other plugins currently do because under the Next Gen Studio UI beta that cross-plugin toolbar combining functionality does not work well anymore (if only some of the installed GeomTools plugins are added to a given tab they will not reliably show up, you have to add all or none for it to work). I’ll be removing that shared toolbar behavior from my other plugins when the beta is fully released.
You can enter something like /17 in one of the angle inputs to get an even division of the circle into 17 parts.
I’m curious what you think of the in-situ tutorial video the plugin shows on first use. It’s the first time I’ve done something like that in a plugin and may add it into some others.
If you’re taking any feature requests… I’d love to see the math from ResizeAlign make its way into this plugin so that every part edge cleanly meets instead of overlaps on a turn. In this example, a road.
You make the absolute best plugins
This might be better than Archimedes actually because it can support banking and spirals!
I am going to use this a really lot
This feature is enabled by default, with a checkbox to control it. When enabled, it looks for any parts which span the width of the selection being duplicated and resizes them / adds WedgeParts in order to create a smooth curve with no z-fighting.
For example, in this road, the curbs / underlying road are resized and have wedges to created to fill the gaps, vs the road markings are only resized to slightly overlap, because the plugin has determined the very small amount of z-fighting for them is allowable:
Hey! I found a bug with this, it doesn’t seem to work if you’re using it on a mesh part or a model of meshes. For example I have a track model with some rails, tunnel and sleepers (Sleepers are the only normal parts in the entire model, everything else is mesh part). I can get around this by just copying the transparent visualization in the explorer, but that’s annoying.
Currently, if I am using an already sloped road segment, and use this plugin to create a curve, it banks the turn by the end, when I only need the Y value to change
Creates some problems as by the end of the flyover ramp on a freeway for example, the road banks quite severely and cars can slide off of the ramp, and also creates a large lump transitioning back to the regular 0° bank of the road
I would for sure promote and use this plugin if for example my road with a 3° slope would be able to be curved with this plugin and not be banked like a race track!
Even better, I would recommend to add the ability to just be able to change the max banking angle for the middle of the curve, and have it go back to 0°
Currently I still have to use manual tools to keep a sloped turn banked correctly instead of saving time via this plugin. I don’t mind taking the time to manually set each edge and align it via F3X to the road surface if it means I get proper banking for a regular freeway ramp
I will for sure be using this on the race track in my game, but outside of that its not much more usable than arc tool
Perfect, just maybe tell me why when i try to duplicate mroe than 300 copies it just doesn’t work? This would be perfect, just maybe fix this issue if possible.
Edit: I found out the issue: Wedge heights should be non-negative.
Solution: Turn off automatic ResizeAlign! Great plugin.
Next update with issues people have reported coming up probably tomorrow.
Not mentioned by anyone here but it does not work well with Join Surfaces enabled currently. That’ll be fixed.
Could you provide a bit more detail? I know there’s some weirdness with negative wedge height that I’m trying to find a satisfying resolution for but I wouldn’t expect that to result in a limited number of copies.
Simple miss by me that ResizeAlign + Mesh breaks it. This will be fixed in the next update.
I am not excellent at explaining stuff, but you can replicate it yourself by making a loop, it will show the error and not work. Maybe its something that it’s upside down? Something that… I don’t know… I’m very confused. Really sorry that I couldn’t explain properly.
Also happens with other amounts copies for example a loop causes it and anything so it’s not a number copy problem if that’s what you thought.
Lots of edits… It works with smaller loops but not bigger ones.. I’m just trying to make it easy to understand and fix the issue i don’t know why i keep doing this to myself.
If this is not what you meant however, please explain what you mean by “more detail”?
If you have something like ShareX or are on Windows 11 I think taking a quick video clip and posting it would be the best way to communicate the issue.
