Regarding of the BillboardGUI instance name

Whenever it comes to the instance “BillboardGUI” it is seen as something that floats in the air with Interface. I was thinking, why is it exactly called as BillboardGUI if “Billboard” has Nothing to do with floating interface in Roblox? But maybe it could mean “Interface that floats above a billboard”.

What if we have the BillboardGUI renamed to “HolographicGUI” or “HologramGUI” so that it would make sense for its name. Infact, with this change it would help new developers to understand what it does!

From my understanding, a billboard is ‘outside’. BillboardGuis exist in the 3D space (diagetic UI) and they relate to this idea of being outside or in the world. I think it works

The word billboard is a more traditional word used in every single engine.

If you just google this then you’ll know.
A billboard within your game is always orientated to face the camera .

Hence, your idea is outrageously useless and doesn’t provide any ease in developing.

Oh i see, thanks for clarifying the confusion. Now I know what it means.

To add, the term “billboard” is widely known in the game dev community.
It’s good to stick to well-known terms rather than making up your own just for the sake of coming up with something new.

No problem. And speaking of the name being a bit misleading. I’d make a counter argument. A billboard in literal sense refers to “a large outdoor board for displaying ads/information”.
By that, billboard fits. As it consistently displays ads/information depending on the developers preference.

While holographic comes from holograms which means “a three-dimensional image made using light beams.”

BillboardGuis aren’t three-dimensional elements hence the word “Billboard” fits them the best.

Hope this clarified your confusion further. Might as well add this to the original topic or just consider flagging it.

Yeah thanks, because someone needed to know exactly what billboard means. So this is for them.

Then I recommend moving this to Help and Feedback > Game Design Support or Help and Feedback > Platform Usage Support and marking my post as the solution. This way, the topic won’t get taken down and it will specifically tell people who got it right.
