Remove required id verification for editablemeshes/images

should be pretty obvious why im making this. why on earth do we need an id to access the editablemeshe/image apis? even with other proper forms of age verification through things like phone numbers?

it just doesnt make sense when this, a low risk feature, requires more age verification over a high risk feature like voice chat which you only need a phone number for (when you used to need id verification). now you might argue, “oh people can upload inappropriate images which are harder to moderate than ones on the market place”.

but let me tell you. you need to: ID verify, create an editable image with asset service, create a program which either lets you draw onto an editable image manually, or convert an image on your system from its encoding to roblox buffers before writing said buffers into an editableimage. and hand made drawings would need to be communicated to the server to have them be globally visible.

theres already games which give you access to manual drawing, such as Spray Paint where i could probably go into a server and find some extremist symbol or adult content within minutes, and that doesnt need an id. all you need is a 13+ phone number

and with voice chat, there have been several times where either ive witnessed or have seen videos of people spamming bass boosted slurs/curse words over voice chat which just wouldnt really happen with editableimages or meshes since theyre actually quite tedious to work with since you actually have to write the data to the image properly. with voice chat you can just press one button and your good to go.

also brings up the point, why do i HAVE TO BE id verified, especially since im verified with my own phone number, which is obviously linked to me (a 17 year old). it should be safe to presume im of age since my account is 9 years old, im phone number verified, over the age of 13, and have had my actual birth date linked to my account since i made it. should be obvious that im over 13 from just my phone number alone, so why still force me to use an id to prove it? i do have an id, its a young scot card which is provided as id for 12-26 year old scottish citizens through a government program, yet persona wont take it due to a slight format difference from traditional ids, and ive tried it several times

im sure many people have this same complaint about the needless id verification, and ive even seen people complain about just this, so why not remove the required id verification? its completely pointless and just limits developer creativity for some people, me included where i have a path tracing project which i want to share, yet cant due to the needed id verification, even tho im age verified through my phone number. its an extremely annoying thing to work with since id have to create another version of the script which uses frames which is obviously terrible for performance

Sorry, but I don’t like this idea.
Roblox shouldn’t do it.

If Roblox allowed EditableImage for everyone, it could be abused. It doesn’t have proper safety—people could just create inappropriate images. That’s why Roblox made it ID-verified only, to prevent this from happening.

How do I know?
Because I created Roblox inside of Roblox—it works, and it’s even faster and better with images. But if someone hacked my game and gained access to the screen, they could easily display inappropriate stuff.
Its better it haves id

Community made resources already exist and has existed long before EditableImages were a thing to render images without going through moderation. They’re also not slow, GradientCanvas for example can render them pretty fast.

the only way this could happen is from someone either writing or finding a script which converts an image format into buffers for editable images. i know these already exist and i do know someone thats made one of these image converters, but even then the person would still need to fire a remote event which replicates that image to every player in a server. obviously possible but far less likely to happen than the example i used for voice chat/audios. since just the start of this year ive heard probably over a dozen people spamming racial slurs or generally inappropriate audio over vc and radios, but ive never seen that happen with editableimages or meshes, and to my knowledge, editableimages arent commonly used outside of paint programs or graphics projects like the one i have. ive only ever seen them used for one of those two

and the worst ive seen from editable meshes which are probably less used than images was a procedural gore system which i dont think even got uploaded, only other use ive seen for them is waves for a water physics game

i really dont see why a feature like voice chat (where you can curse all over the place with only occasional mutes) should just need a phone number while a rarely used, more difficult to use feature should be locked behind id verification even when youre already verified through a phone number

thf i dont rlly care about cursing at all cause its kinda stupid to care about it, but looking at a more roblox tos view point, you could probably see why this just doesnt make sense to me at all

so whats stopping people from making inappropriate things with gui frames or normal parts? thats a weak arguement.

thats ur fault that your game has no security. Also the exploiter can still use editable meshes and images, because its not the user who needs to be ID verified, its the game owner

you dont..

sorry but roblox is never doing this
you’ll probably have to wait like 7 years for this to even get noticed

so much stuff roblox adds nowadays includes OAuth2 support requires id verification even though it is not needed.

Bump this guy has a point. like a third party can still pretty much not use these apis and still do the same harm , this guard rail just harms normal developers

This ID requirement is what killed my entire impression about editable images and meshes and made me NOT look forward into it.
I’ve sworn to myself not to touch it until Roblox lifts this requirement
This definitely wasn’t engineers at fault, but rather project managers.

(and im pretty sure it was mentioned before that id verification does not stop bad actors and they’ve acknowledged it. way to go roblox)

Well, EditableImage is much worse — like, much worse. Do you want to join a game and see an image? It’s insanely inappropriate. You said it’s my fault the game doesn’t have security, but it’s not my fault — it’s Roblox’s fault for not doing anything about EditableImage.

And why are you bringing the exploiter into this? Exploiters already have access to everything. It would be much safer if Roblox made EditableImage IDs verified only, because if they stay public, people can use them to show inappropriate images, live inappropriate websites, dating content, swears, and slurs.

It’s better to have id verified only like WE DONT WANT TO JOIN A GAME THEN WE SEE A INAPPROPRIATE IMAGE ITS BAD LIKE LETS IMAGINE A KID JOINED IT

It’s what I’m doing — using buffers and stuff. Again, it’s great that Roblox added ID-verified images. Imagine a game that shows inappropriate content and the creator didn’t verify the image IDs (or used a bot) — that would be hard to patch. With ID verification, it would be much easier to prevent bad stuff from showing, and accounts --these accounts could be main and I’d gets suspension I think that violate the rules could be terminated.

I hope nobody is mad of me saying about editable it’s just bad idea and won’t happen cause why would Roblox put id verification to this it’s for safety

Plus why are you mad
It’s just my opinion and it won’t happen Roblox won’t remove id verification it’s for safety
Cause there is no moding editableimage

Okay some of you guys tell me they can use frames and gui well it’s true but it’s not like real time video like my game it streams my pc and it’s fast and better grapics using frames it would be laggy and bad grapics so

The same thing can happen right now with the usage of these third-party resources. It’s not different.

@MRLOSER_HAHAha i agree with pretty much everyone else here, what ur saying could happen is already achievable with frames/parts, and ive even seen that happen several times come to think of it in the exact unmoderated way you are mentioning

there have been several times where ive come across extremist symbols/inappropriate imagery/structures just through the use of parts. there are models/decals in the toolbox which ive come across just by scrolling that breaks tos by either hiding the actual tos violating content inside a part, or just lack of moderation

and it is your own fault for not implementing security precautions. its pretty easy to do so by just… not letting exploiters get access to remote events. im not exactly sure how to go around this since ive never really had to think about security, but still, i know developers who have done just that. obviously there would be more precautions to take but thats just an example of what you could do

and as @eclipse6273094 said, and as ive already said, inappropriate content can still be easily done with parts/frames. i could join a game right now and have a chance of seeing several extremist symbols. roblox just fails in a lot of cases to do anything moderation wise, so its still possible to come across extremist/adult if not downright illegal content just on the market place (all of which i have found just by scrolling)

and anyways, id verification will not stop bad actors, if im correct, roblox does not keep track of id, so you could just use the same one across multiple accounts and repeat the same offence over and over again

Your point falls apart the moment you realize there are tons of bypassed images being uploaded and shown to users every day. All those games that let players draw stuff deal with the same issues they just handle their own moderation.

If you’re having moderation problems, that’s simply bad design and poor moderation on your part.

and you should not argue with people in a futures request. you made your point you don’t like it let others speak.

I don’t get what you mean. We had freeform image creation prior to EditableImages. This would enable nothing malicious that couldn’t have been done before.

It’s true bypassed images it’s the worse plus at least parts not reallie like stuff and frame it’s possible but with bad graphics and it would be takes down fast

I know editableimage is great for using but if it’s public it could be abused do badly cause using it haves better grapics like a image of and bypass everything do if someone wanted to bypass he would use editableimage to stream live inappropriate

Bypassed images it’s not live it’s just image

Parts aren’t It bad it doesn’t look reallie or something

Frames it could be but bad graphics and waste of time

Here is a 4K example of a ViewporyCanvas image, a library made by boatbomber which existed before EditableImages. It uses parts:

Here is GradientCanvas which existed before even that:

This one uses UIGradients.

Not to mention some people just use Frames directly because it’s still possible to display high-resolution images using those:

Roblox will not forgo any safety protections by removing the ID-lock. All they’ve done is make games laggier, because if someone wants to display a custom, runtime image, it was already possible for them to do so before EditableImages were implemented. EditableImages are just more performant (but from my experience, if I’m recalling correctly, GradientCanvas is the fastest of the methods I’ve mentioned to generate and statically pretty performant, but it’s been a few years since I’ve used it).
