Retro Materials - Model to use in your Roblox experiences

Introducing… (edited)

Hey there, Today I decided to release my “Classic Materials” Resource, allowing creators to create games using the retro materials from 2010-2012 & classic materials from 2013-2022.

These materials don’t include any “surface material” such as:

  • inlets
  • studs
  • weld
  • glue
  • universal.

I’m looking towards providing users textures for all of those later on!
Comparison (excluding new materials added in 2022)

Here is a preview of the materials being used in some of my games:

There are currently a few known issues, which I can’t fix on my own, but hopefully a new improved “Custom Materials” system will come out at some point, making this possible:

  • No emissive maps for materials
  • No glass material
  • No overlay for textures such as “Grass - 2010”, “Corroded Metal/Rust”, “Fabric”, “Bricks”, “Cobblestone”, “Wooden Planks” and many others.
  • No Terrain textures yet

Bonuses included:

  • Low Res textures (used by the old Roblox clients on low-end devices)
  • Mobile texture for corroded metal
  • 2010 color variations for corroded metal (those that were on Roblox at the time, will remember rust having different colors on specific colors)
  • 2019 variants of materials (some may know that the wooden planks material was slightly changed in 2019, I included both the original and the current one/2019)

You can use this here:

Reasons you would need this:
some materials are slightly different, such as 2013 marble & you can use this to create experiences which feature different eras of roblox in one single place, giving you the flexibility to use 2022 materials at the same time as old materials.
I’m looking towards adding 2022 materials too, so people can keep pre-2022 materials as their default option if they choose to!

the 2010 materials dont have the “overlays” any way to replicate them?
when using an old roblox emulator u can see an overlay ontop of the texture, is there a way to like add it?

I would like to say yes, however the current way Roblox creates custom materials doesn’t support it, unfortunately that would require you to make your own material for each color or use some decal for the overlays :frowning:
That’s what I’ve done in one of my games…

do u still have the decals?
cuz uh that would help me

Thank you for making this! hoping more support would come to this, even I’m just someone who just joined in 2016 I think these materials do give a charm yet nice feeling. Nostalgic for some yes, but I just kind of wanna make an excuse to send a comment (like giving a heart wasn’t enough for me to move on) so yeah! Thanks

Do they have accurate lightning?

can you make this wood material from 2010? (i think it was in 2010)

This is not possible because this material was procedurally generated using C code rather than using a looping texture (you could potentially use EditableImage but that’s another can of worms)

Hey, just a question about the pack.

I was using your pack and was very happy about it. Though, I was disappointed you decided to split it into two packs with the full one needing to pay actual money for. Any reason why?

mmm, glue

I’am also interested why it also costs money now

Did you make these textures yourself? If not, I would assume roblox might take issue with you reselling their textures, not entirely sure though.

Sorry for the late reply but, yeah, it kinda pisses me off
