Revert Changes to the 2D Clothing Update

This is in reference to this devforum post where changes to 2D clothing prices, revenue changes are mentioned here

As someone that used to make a lot of 2D clothing in the past, It is impossible to find a good explanation that this would be a change that benefits clothing designers, developers, and investors on the platform.

I’m going to show some statements from the devforum post and just go from there.

Main issue here, is expecting people to pay upwards to 2000% MORE robux to upload a singular clothing asset. There is actually a somewhat similar incident that happened with the same amount of backlash and got reverted for obvious reasons..

Remember when everyone freaked out over an upload price increase in 2020? and it later got reverted to the price we known today 10 robux? This isn’t anything new and I genuinely don’t understand the point of going back after almost SIX YEARS to make a even more drastic change that nobody liked in the first place.

Be free to check the replies on this forum above and you will see people were NOT pleased with the price changes for something that has a price floor of only 5 robux.

The ID verification, and 2 step + roblox plus subscription is understandable, and it really should of only been that for requirements…

wait a minute-

600 ROBUX TO PUBLISH???

Genuinely what is this bullshit?

2D clothing designers are quite literally the foundation of clothing outfits on roblox, and the most underappreciated types of developers out there. They realistically do not get many sales anymore.

Let me put this into perspective;
This singular clothing item here, is from a group that has over 100,000 members in it
and it makes LESS than the revenue earned per week than the uploading fee and publishing fee COMBINED and that is with the 70% percent revenue.

Only 420 robux was earned in a large group that is 100k+ in a span of a week.

If this is the most earnt 2D clothing item the group has, check out the SECOND bestselling one

only 128 robux in a week.

Bear in mind, these are items that have been in the catalog and have been put into the algorithm for years at this point. Newer clothing items will most likely not get this treatment and would realistically get around 1-5 sales if lucky in a span of a month.

This combined with the fact people usually will upload matching pants with their shirt will double the price fee because they have to upload and publish those assets for people to buy.. In total this comes up to 1,600 Robux IN TOTAL for an outfit.

If you were to need to buy robux to upload and publish a full outfit, you will need to give a bit more than $15 USD WITH Roblox Plus.

For people that make around 4 full outfits (4 shirts, 4 pants) a month, you know how much that would come up to if you had to buy robux and roblox plus? Lemme do the math for you.

You would need to buy both the 1,500 robux and 270 robux packages 4 different times if you were to do it individually. That comes up to around $18 for 1,770 robux.

In total that would be 7,080 robux, for $77 + tax which if you’re in a state that is 10% tax for digital fees, roughly $84.70

What if you buy the larger robux package?? Wouldn’t I save more?

Technically Yes, but not by a lot. 11,000 is roughly $100. You basically would get a slightly better deal but you have to spend more, so pick your poison.

The revenue % Changes…

Did you know that you actually WONT get 3 robux earnt per 5 robux sale anymore? You actually will earn way less!!

Yeah.. You aren’t gonna be earning jack after the change occurs.
Yes, I have this clothing asset set to 6 robux, because it gave me 4 robux instead of the usual 3 robux after tax. however this will be sliced in more than HALF

Usually clothing prices are set to 5 to be able to compete with the market. this would typically make a clothing designer earn 3 robux per sale from a place that keeps the robux amount 5 robux; which isn’t all places,

Regional Pricing Is turned on by default, so other countries will have it set for less than 5 robux as price floor.

Again, I’m going to do some math.
When you get a sale for price floor of 5 robux, you earn only 3 robux
the decimal gets rounded down, keep this in mind

We are going from 70% to a depressing 30% revenue split for clothing creators, and 40% to game devs.
You know how much a price floor of 5 robux will make everyone earn?

ONE damn robuck. not even two robux.

With regional prices, I don’t think it would count as 1 robux even, practically free labor.

Remember How i previously said you would need to spend 1,600 robux for a full outfit (shirt + pants) to be uploaded and published? You will need that EXACT number of sales too in order to return a profit off of making clothes in robux.

What about making a return in cash in devex rates?

You would need to have earned about over 25,000 sales…

I’m just putting this here

Btw, you are putting this in just for Brookhaven to get 2 more measily robux, those games already earn MILLIONS from multiple aspects but you decided that they needed that 2 robux to ‘encourage them’ to add clothing into a game, which most of the time has zero fit unless its a catalog game, or a roleplay game.

Either the people on the board that agreed with this is entirely out of the loop of how poorly clothing designers actually get treated who would earn less than a fraction of a penny per sale, Or you are lying and are actually trying to phase out 2D clothing by ulterior means..

(such as making it literally not worth the effort of making clothing design)

To dumb it down, you think 800 robux for a 2d clothing asset, which earns the creator 1 robux per sale is sustainable? Nicest way possible that is delusional

Only the top couple hundred out of probably over 10 million best selling clothing items earn that in a week.

Probably won’t happen but I wish for this update to be reverted, or keep only the security requirements

Adding in steep prices, and making us earn only 1 robux per sale while designers are already underpaid makes it insufficient for anyone to continue designing.

I should have specified, I’m referring to games already at large scale that include clothing in their games such as Catalog Creator or any sort of large roleplay game thats been out for years

Oh… Eh then throw in the big games on the rich guy side.

Great explanation. Unfortunately, the staff in charge of this update have zero ability to do math and therefore have no business being in charge of anything. The fact that a game “dev” can slap your item into their game and make more money than the creator from a sale is, to this day, some of the most insane logic I’ve witnessed.

“well ackshually creators can just increase their prices to earn more”
All of UGC is a race to the bottom of the price floor. Only Roblox is capable of selling items at scale for any amount that is above price floor. Not a fix.

I can only conclude that Roblox is intentionally discriminating against 2D clothing creators, likely because they deem 2D as “less” than 3D.

800 sales to break even for 2D UGC vs. ~60 sales to break even on 3D UGC

Bump , this is crazy roblox needs to revert this update instantly , anyone who approved this should be fired

Revert this Roblox!!! 800 Robux total to upload a 2d asset is crazy even bigger groups will agree this is wrong.
Your going to take the passion of 2d designers and your killing them

Someone either didn’t do the math when implementing this update, or it’s simply an update aimed at destroying classic clothing creators, not just small creators but also large ones.

Let me give you an example: this is an item I uploaded a month ago.:

Under the old rules, it would have already earned over 200 Robux. Under the new rules, it’s far from breaking even, and I might never even make a profit.

Another example:

I uploaded this shirt in May, I would have already earned over 1,400 Robux under the old rules. Under the new rules, this item is still far from being profitable!

I should add that I upload each of these clothes in sets (shirt + pants), so for a few months, these clothes wouldn’t earn anything under the new rules, so I’d have to constantly spend thousands of Robux (1,600 Robux per set) without making any profit.

This update completely destroys 2D creators. It’s sad because I’ve been creating 2D clothing for 6 years, and it sold better than accessories (and I was invited to the Top UGC Creators program, so my accessories didn’t sell poorly). It shows how popular 2D clothing is, and I don’t understand why something that’s popular gets destroyed. I’d like someone to re-evaluate this update and see how destructive it is, not only for small creators but also for large groups. Equating the costs for 2D and 3D item uploads while keeping the 5-robux price floor is just absurd.

this and this awareness should be spread out on twitter, no one is realizing the deep impact of this update and its so sad theres little outrage cuz clothing community is small

Roblox please stop doing hate crimes on poor devs :C

roblox can point at us and say “oh well, nobody is using 2D clothing” what they fail to mention is the fact they announced this horrible update and gave us one week

Bump. This 2D clothing update was totally expected knowing that Roblox just wants everyone using 3D layers. The worst part is them saying “oh you can create your own game and keep 70% of the profit” but then if you build a clothing store you can use Roblox’s own template but who is actually going to join it right? You can drop 10k robux to sponsor your store just to make some robux right? Bottom line is Roblox is just making the rich stay rich while everyone starting out gets completely left behind because if you don’t make tons of robux why would Roblox even care right?

Bumped.
I upload clothing mostly for myself, which can sometimes lead to iterative processes (if I mess up), and spending another 200 robux for basically a mis-placed fill bucket would probably just kill me.
If I don’t mess up? Still 200 down the drain. This update is malicious in nature and I have literally prayed it would be reverted.
PLEASE, ROBLOX, revert this.

As the owner of the biggest 2D clothing group on Roblox, I completely agree that this update is going to kill 2D clothing and it’s obvious Roblox is trying to phase it out.

The fees to upload being the same as 3d items is completely unfair. Even the new UGC animation packs have a similar fee (although they require 8-9 assets for moderation) compared to a single image that’s lower than 500x500 pixels.

Discovery in catalog for 2D clothing already sucks. Increased fees while being the last category of clothing in the catalog on both the app and website is just devastating.

I’m very disappointed in Roblox here. Instead of finding a practical solution, they opted for an easy one. I think it’s finally time to hire more moderators.

If ensuring safety is the main goal, I suggest giving the option for manual human review (instead of using AI moderation) to waive the fee. I think clothing creators would prefer waiting for review over paying a $10 fee for each upload. Roblox already takes a 30% of clothing sales, so I think manual review isn’t much to ask for.

If anyone disagrees, please correct me as this is just an idea for a compromise. Of course, keeping the system how it was prior to this update would be the most ideal scenario.

On a side note, I wish Roblox would encourage its employees to take at least 30 minutes of the workday to engage with the community. I think doing stuff as simple as playing games, browsing the forum, watching videos, and looking through social media posts/comments (all being Roblox-related) would be beneficial. I understand there might be conflicts of interest, so staff might be unable to give their input directly in these areas, but I feel that understanding the community’s perspective is crucial. Instead of giving the community what you think they need, make decisions that aligns with their interests.

PLEASE REACT SHARE THIS VIDEO TILL IT REACHES THE LARGER AUDIENCE .

this video sums up ALL OF THE FEEDBACK AND YEARS OF FEEDBACK FROM CLOTHING CREATORS , this update has just not given us hopeless and despair of our hardwork being worthless and wiped off completely by making it hard for clothing creators to earn and upload, but it has also proved clothing creators all along that we never mattered because for years our community has been facing issues that were never fixed .

I’m genuinely convinced Roblox wants to destroy the creators on this platform. This update means that even if you just want to upload a custom shirt for personal use, you’d still have to pay 200 Robux. That’s horrible for people who can’t afford Robux (or just don’t want to spend money on it), and it’s not worth it for a single 2D clothing asset. A while ago, I quit making clothing to sell to other people because of Roblox’s BS, so I’ve only been making custom shirts for myself and my avatars, but now I won’t even be able to do that anymore because of this update. Just insane. It’s like they’re trying to come up with the worst updates in history and having a meeting saying “How can we make this even more miserable for our playerbase?”

Tbh, Roblox is just risking pushing away the smaller creators who helped make the marketplace what it is today. With these changes, it would discourage many 2D creators from continuing to make content for the 2D marketplace. Roblox is basically taking the approach of “if you’re broke, it’s not our problem,” and since they seem to be doubling down on this, a lot of people are going to push back because of how unreasonable these changes are.
