Rights Manager Sends Copyright Notices to Group Owner Instead of Uploader

When a copyright infringement claim is made through the Rights Manager for a UGC item that was uploaded to a group, the warning only goes to the group owner. However, if the person who uploaded the item isn’t the group owner (which is often the case), they don’t get notified at all — not via Roblox messages or email.

This is a problem because the uploader is usually the one who created the asset and is the only person who can properly respond or file a counterclaim (unless they have an attorney or legal guardian acting on their behalf). Without being notified, they have no idea there was ever a claim, which can lead to items being taken down unfairly or without response.

Notifying the group owner might make sense in some cases, but the uploader absolutely needs to be informed as well — ideally, both parties should get the warning so they can coordinate. Right now, the person who actually uploaded the item is left completely out of the loop.

Where It Happens

On Rights Manager, when reporting UGC assets uploaded to a group by a non-owner account.

When It Happens

This issue has been ongoing for as long as Rights Manager has supported group-uploaded items. Most recently confirmed on July 8, 2025.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Upload a UGC item to a group from an account that is not the group owner.
  2. Submit a copyright claim against the item using Rights Manager.
  3. Wait for the warning to be sent.
  4. You’ll see that the group owner gets the message.
  5. The uploader gets nothing — no message, no email, no visibility.

Happens 100% of the time.

Extra Info (will be sent privately)

I’ll send over the affected usernames, user IDs, screenshots of their Roblox inboxes and email inboxes, the group link, and the item links — all through a private message in case my specific case helps you investigate faster.

(The copyright issue itself has already been resolved, and I’m not expecting any legal assistance from you; this is just provided as an example for you to review the issue of the uploader not being notified)

@raskolibov Thanks for contacting us. We’ve looked into your report regarding copyright notices being sent to group owners instead of the original uploaders. Based on our review, this behavior is consistent with how the system is currently designed.
We appreciate you bringing this to our attention. Your feedback has been noted and may help inform future improvements.

Okay, in this case, does the group owner need to take any action such as sending a counter notice? Because the group owner is me and the uploader is a different person (my partner). My partner, who is the uploader, sent a counter notice 14 days ago, and today the content was reinstated. So, I’ll assume the issue is resolved. However, I would like to know if there is anything the owner should do. After all, I was the one who received the whole warning message.
