We’re expanding our test for Roblox-provided discounts on avatar items to in-game items, including passes and developer products. Starting this week, some users may see offers for discounts on eligible items in your in-game Shop, in a promotional banner within your Shop, or in an in-game stream notification.
These offers are provided entirely by Roblox. Creators will continue to receive the normal payout based on the item’s undiscounted price.
In-game items, including developer products and passes, and avatar items are now eligible as part of this test. Discounts on subscriptions and private servers are not eligible. Eligible users will receive offers automatically, and each offer can be used once before it expires.
Enable In-Game Shop for Users
There is no setup required. However, if you would like to increase the ways a user may find an offer on your in-game items, you can do so by making your item eligible to be sold in Shop and enable the global Shop button for an always-visible entry point:
This is a really strong expansion of the offers system.
Extending Roblox funded discounts beyond avatar items to passes and developer products creates a much more interesting opportunity for both players and creators. Players get access to better value, while creators still receive the normal payout based on the undiscounted price, which makes this feel like a genuinely creator friendly approach to experimentation with promotions.
I also like that there is no additional setup required for eligibility, while creators can still improve visibility by enabling the in game Shop button. That keeps the system simple to adopt without forcing teams to redesign their monetization flows.
From a LiveOps perspective, this could be especially useful for increasing conversion on items that players may have considered purchasing but previously skipped. It also gives Roblox more flexibility to test promotional mechanics without creators having to absorb the cost of those discounts themselves.
Overall, this feels like a smart way to improve purchasing opportunities for users while protecting creator earnings. I am very interested to see how this performs across passes and developer products as the test expands.
interesting update, as long as roblox covers it then i’m happy as a developer.
would it be possible to extend such a concept to allow developers their own “sales” or dynamic discounts? (with developers losing the X% difference on purchases)
While providing developers with full compensation for discounted items is a good thing, there still should be a way to disable this for specific passes or products.
Some paid items require a degree of exclusivity for the game to function properly, and lowering the price of them might cause problems as too many users gain access to it. In the words of Syndrome, if everyone’s super, no one will be.
Ultimately, the decision to discount an item should lie with the developer. I would hope that most games are designed in such a way that lowering the price of a paid item would be a benefit, but I know that a lot of games just aren’t like that.
Can we do the same with Private Servers bought for free by those Roblox plus subscribers? Nobody wants that, hurts monetization and was forced down our throats
Is this a feature that can be opted out per gamepass? I know some of us issue gamepasses at high prices to minimize usage of powerful items and keep them at rare low occurrences (such as powerful guns meant only to be used in rare/low numbers). These gamepasses might be better off untouched in price, especially if we issue seasonal discounts ourselves. Stacked discounts, for instance, can make these gamepasses easier to obtain than intended.
Is there actually any reason why you would want this to be turned off? You are still going to get regular amount of robux if players buy stuff for discounted price.
Players will get used to a discounted price and get angry if the discount changes or goes away. Players who bought the item at full price will get angry if they discover an immediately following discount. This kind of stuff happens all the time.
Can we have the ability to enable discounts ourselves for an example celebrations but only getting the payout of the discounted price with taxes?
I do not like the idea of having to sell different products and gamepasses with discounted prices.
Also give us the ability to opt out of this per-gamepass/product.
Just in case something goes wrong in our case. We have some unique circumstances that could be fragile to changes like this, so we’d like the option at least - we figure things will be fine and it isn’t about being mean to our players, it’s just the ability to be careful and feel it out with our systems.
