Roblox Soft Lighting force applied even when Realistic Lighting is activated

I just got a new laptop with an Intel Arc 140v GPU a few weeks ago, and while testing studio, I notice that whether I select Realistic or Soft in the Lighting properties, it stays rendered as Soft. I tried in the Roblox player and it had no difference.

At first, I thought it was my drivers being out of date (and they were, for some reason) , so I did a clean update to newer drivers. No difference, I figured it was something else, I saw the same issue reported around March last year, something about the GPU causing roblox to crash, and that Soft was applied as a hardware restriction to Intel Arc GPUs as a temporary fix from a staff member to stop people from crashing.

Since my drivers are up to date, the future lighting should work, but since this restriction is in place and apparently has been forgotten about, I’m stuck on soft lighting for now.

Please investigate whether Realistic lighting is being incorrectly disabled or falling back on Intel Arc 140V hardware despite the current graphics driver.

Expected behavior

Future lighting should be visible and not barred from computers with this GPU.

Intel Arc 140v GPUs have been blacklisted from realistic lighting for a while due to crashes when that GPU just came out. I’ll check if it’s still an issue on latest drivers.

If you want to test it yourself on your device, the flag to undo the restriction is to set FStringGraphicsDX11TurnOffFutureLighting3 to empty.

I tried to apply that flag in clientappsettings, I did not crash but I did not see a difference either. maybe its not in the allowed list?

one thing I forgot to mention is that I actually got future lighting to work for a brief moment in a seperate test game in studio before i made this post while messing around with lighting settings, although it regressed back to the shadowmap only lighting. not sure how to recreate it but it was working on this gpu

Our local testing came back, the GPU should be fine for getting realistic lighting. It should be back in two hours or so from now. If there are no reports of crashes, this change should stick.

Unfortunately, it become one of the most common crashes on the app. I’ll have to do a more targetted allow list of devices with intel arc GPUs and will have to revert this for the weekend.

In the meantime, do you mind sending over your dx driver version?

i upgraded to the 32.0.101.8864 version, like i said the drivers were outdated by a year or two even when i bought this new laptop a month
i send the dx diagnostic as a text file to the associated message

Intel commented on the issue and that it should be fixed with newer drivers;

I’ll have to ship a deny list filter that allows me to check for that version or newer. Enough people are still using the old drivers that it’d be one of the largest sources of crashes on our Windows machines. It’ll be out September 1 earliest I’m afraid.

Hey, I’ve created a more permissive filter that should prevent only versions of the driver with the crash in them. Am rolling it out now and you should be able to see future lighting again in 2 hours from now.

It should work in Client too in the latest version.
