Roblox Studio taking up excessive amounts of RAM

  1. What do you want to achieve?
I want Roblox Studio to stop taking up an excessive amount of RAM so I can work on my game. Even if it just means lowering it to, say, 10-15 GB of ram usage, that at least be substantial enough to make work possible.

  2. What is the issue?
When opening up a development place for my game in Roblox Studio, the app starts to take up more and more RAM, even when idle and not playtesting. This eventually peaks to around 20 GB of RAM usage (up to 99% of my max memory!!!), which severely tanks studio performance and makes studio operation tedious.

I’ve had it open while typing this, nothing is being done and yet it’s taking up so much RAM.

Although I don’t have an exact idea of when this issue began, I’d say it only became a problem around the last few months.

I’m guessing it has something to do with the place itself, but I don’t know what it could be beyond just being a result of a lot of scripts or parts. It doesn’t make sense as the game has had a similar amount of components months before and has not had any performance issues, only recently has it become a problem. Maybe some feature is under stress with all of the components and that’s why it’s only selectively attacking this game? I don’t know.

  1. What solutions have you tried so far?
  • I’ve disabled the New Luau Type Solver beta feature. In fact, I’ve just disabled almost all of the beta features.

  • I’ve tried disabling autocomplete and script analysis, together and separately.

  • I’ve uninstalled & reinstalled Studio. It fixed the issue for about a few hours, and then after that it began again.

  • I’ve scoured this forum for solutions, and I haven’t found an article that addresses the issue if it isn’t already patched through disabling Type Solver or some other script feature.

Please help ASAP. Thank you!

What the- I have 16 gb of ram on my PC, and roblox studio does NOT take up this much ram.. Did I miss something?

Im pretty sure it has to do with complexity of the place. I don’t really make complex games and stuff so I guess I haven’t ran into a problem like this.

It’s pretty odd to say the least. As also I have all beta features on and still does not take up THAT much ram.

Any chance you recently got something from the toolbox containing a hidden script that’s causing this?
Or how about a newly installed plugin?
Is it a Team Create place? If so have any of your other builders put models or have a plugin that’s causing the issue?

No to all of these, and even besides, those hidden scripts wouldn’t execute without being in playtest mode anyway; this issue happens even when not in playtest mode, which makes me think it’s not a matter of the place being infected.

I should also mention that the RAM usage fluctuates constantly. At times it spikes from 4 GB up to 20 GB, and then back down again. Generally, even if I do something to clear up RAM usage, the effects are short lived and the RAM usage slowly spikes up and down back to a constant 90-99% usage.

By the graphs it looks like a memory leak, but im no expert when it comes to that.

I meanwhile only got 4 GB of ram, 3.4 GB usable on my Acer Aspire 5 a515-43 laptop :sob:

This is without launching Roblox Studio and only running Microsoft Edge with 2 tabs

It fixed itself. I’m not sure what caused it to, but it’s no longer using up so much RAM. In any case, god help us all.

if you’re (still) wondering, there was an issue with Vulkan that caused massive memory leaks
