As a typical student entering the field of Computer Science, I initially had the innocent idea of creating an RPG game on Roblox Studio during high school. I possessed no knowledge of Roblox Lua and was largely unaware of the extensive time commitment required for game development. I naively believed that a single summer would suffice for me to complete and release the game. Development officially started approximately one year ago, beginning with my efforts alone over the summer, which eventually led to me deciding that I needed a small developer team for this project.
After two years since I first had the idea and beginning development roughly one year ago, I have a firm grasp on the game’s scale and the roadmap I need to follow to release Rogue Frontier. In this post, I’ll explain what Rogue Frontier is about, provide a roadmap for the initial release, and discuss the game’s content.
What would happen if the Sun never rose one morning? Rogue Frontier answers that question by throwing you into an unforgiving world of never-ending night. A world coming to the ruin and despair after the Sun never rose. As an adventurer, you will embark on quests, exploring forgotten lands, battling the mutated monstrous of the night, and uncovering the secrets of the night. Armed with weaponry, magic, and technology of the survivors you must unravel the mystery of the missing sun.
Rogue Frontier is an open-world Roguelite Action RPG that features a class system and permadeath mechanics. There are no level requirements for anything or everything. What exactly does having no level requirements entail? You can travel almost anywhere on the map, fight any monster, and challenge any dungeon you like. Most importantly, if you purchase or find high-quality equipment, there are no restrictions on how you can equip it based on classes or level. This enables the players to truly feel immersed.
Your character is truly unique. I've always enjoyed randomization and have spent a fair amount of time making each character you create unique. One aspect which makes characters unique is race, each character will be randomly assigned a race based on rarity. Races have a significant impact on gameplay with each race offering unique traits and abilities, additionally they are the only skill tree available early game. Also, each race will also offer three variants which as of now are purely cosmetics.
The difficulty will not be set in stone. I understand that some people do not enjoy soul-crushing games and prefer to play casually for fun without fear of losing every second. As a result, I’ve decided to add various difficulties that can be changed every time you wipe or create a new character. The planned difficulty levels are currently “Normal” → “Hard” → “Rogue”. The main difference between difficulties is the number of lives; at “Rogue” difficulty, you only have one life, but increasing difficulty also results in a higher reward, with increased loot drops and gold gain.
There are numerous skill trees in Rogue Frontier. There are skill tree for your race, class, subclass, sin, and a global skill tree that affects all slots.
Gold is the only means of progression. Rogue Frontier’s main currency is gold, which can be used to buy equipment from vendors, get healed by doctor, buy a house, open a guild, progress your skill tree, and much more! You can earn gold by selling monster loot, foraging, dungeon crawling, fishing, gardening, and more to come in the future.
Party play is a important aspect of Rogue Frontier. Though you can always play solo, It is heavily encouraged to play with friends or other adventures to challenge bosses and dungeons.
There is a lot of content and functionality that I am skipping over for the sake of simplicity, but there are also some that I cannot reveal because there is only so much I can describe and say without spoiling it.
