Seeking advice from developers that use music in their games

I’m currently creating a rhythm game and I just had a song I published (not mine) a month ago that got moderated today. This wouldn’t be a problem had they not taken a whole month. Making charts for these songs are time consuming and for it to take a whole month to moderate feels pretty unfair. (I did have direct permission from the artist themself to use it)

I’m really just wondering how games like RoBeats or FnF copies get access to their songs. I had permission directly from the artist to use some of the songs that got moderated, so I’m just unsure how these games are navigating to bypass this moderation, if that is even how they are doing it.

Please don’t tell me to just use the creator catalog of music, there is some stuff there, but let’s be honest, most of it is just not that great (especially for a rhythm game)

Simple answer, they don’t. I think they just upload music willy-nilly and hope for the best. I would be lying if I said I haven’t done this for mine, but it has been 3 months with no problems.
(Also, some of the artists I’m using don’t speak English which would have made things insanely hard if even possible)

Check out the music by Underscore, he has some pretty good tracks for rhythm games.

The ones I’m using in mine are:

  • ULTIMATUM
  • FINAL HOPE
  • reality is decaying\world-end. (This one in particular is good for suffering- 6 minutes of extratone)
  • SPEEDCORE NIGHTLIFE
  • ETHEREAL VELOCITY
  • CYBER 999
  • 2024 BPM IS NOT ENOUGH

I appreciate you taking your time to recommend me some!

I feel like I do the same as well, but that comes at the risk of getting so many strikes on your account does it not? I always reach out to artist via email to get their permission to use their songs so I find it terrible that when I do everything possibly correct, I am still at the mercy of Roblox moderation.

Not to mention, I give my songs a few weeks to get moderation checked before I go and chart them in because they take hours for each song. I just feel like getting a song struck down after a month is just kind of crazy to me.

It does. Unfortunately I’m being made to do this because every attempt I’ve had to reach out to an artist, I’ve got nothing but radio silence. (Again, probably because they don’t speak English and had no idea what I was asking, but I’m just running on the assumption that because my game is free-to-play with zero transactions, most artists would be okay with it)

Rhythm games on roblox is kinda just risky as hell now, there’s no good options to get music and even if you do have permission, roblox doesn’t know that. All you can really do is take risks.

I appealed to Roblox about a similar issue a while back.

Although you may have been granted permission from artists, Roblox does not have systems in place to confirm this permission. Here’s hoping there will be one soon.

I also got this same exact auto reply message. Given the timestamp from your image, and the fact I got this two months ago gives me less hope.

Although, I do understand the technicalities that come with permission granting and as for now, all it seems I can do is give an audio more than a month to settle to see if moderation comes and kills it or not.
