We have heard your feedback about being able to set minimum ages – you can now choose a minimum age group (separate from your experience’s Content Maturity Label). Additionally, you can also indicate which regions users will have access to your experience.
These settings can be used to target specific players for brand partnerships or to beta test your experience with certain age groups or regions before rolling out to wider audiences, giving you more control over who can access your experiences.
By default, users of all ages and all regions will be able to access your experience. Note that additional age-based or regional restrictions may still apply based on the answers you provide in the Maturity & Compliance Questionnaire. Experiences without a content maturity label will still be unavailable for users under 13.
These settings are now available on the Access Settings page. To set age and regional restrictions, navigate to: Creator Hub > Creators > Select an experience > Audience > Access Settings.
I see the intent here but I worry this will be used by some developers to unnecessarily limit access to specific countries for political/discriminatory reasons. The age requirement is good, though.
The age gate is a good change for promoting more mature communities in games where this matters, especially roleplay-focused games, and for peace of mind that one’s more mature game won’t unintentionally have a negative influence on a younger audience.
I think that there should be a warning if an age setting locks out more than a certain proportion of one’s player base, though. I could see some less experienced creators jumping at the chance to make their community less toxic and getting upset and confused when their active player count plummets.
Developers can do this themself and it’s very easy, you only need to check a property. I do agree this should be implemented as an option without needing scripts, but I can see why it wasn’t implemented.
does it boost the game if its meant for a specific region and i select that region? or its just going to restrict players that couldve played, if it restricts without giving any value, then whats the point?
also, i feel this will be used in hate toward some countries and racism
As much as I fear racism and xenophobia being a factor in region-gating, I actually agree with this. Especially because backlash from one’s userbase can shake any sense of such beliefs being majority.
again, doesn’t change anything. I’ve already played an idle game on Roblox that seemingly halved my points because I’m in the US; others in their discord also seemingly had the same problem. Not going to point fingers, though.
