But I enjoyed looking back at early ROBLOX Halloween games and seeing the style and colors used.
I was thinking of adding trees with no leaves, maybe making the fog thicker and putting decorations on boxes and stands such as pumpkins, spider webs, etc. [If you have feedback for the normal island map as well, it is welcomed!]
No offense, but it just looks like generic “modern stud slop”.
Defining 'Modern stud slop'
Modern Stud Slop
A building style which attempts to recreate the older roblox building style, while not actually doing anything correct for said building style.
Issues within “Modern Stud Slop” can contain, but is not limited to:
Incorrectly scaled parts & cutoff studs
Not using studs correctly (For example, just plastering them on every surface)
Incorrect use of colors (Using Color3s instead of BrickColors)
Not using the actual in-engine studs, resorting to Textures, Materials, Decals etc.
Structures & Buildings are too “high definition” (Extension of incorrectly scaled parts)
Yes, I get it, this is a building style. It’s, in my honest opinion, just not that good. It’s trying to replicate something while actively making it look worse. Just use actual materials at this point, go for a 2015-2017 vibe.
Call me nit-picky and whatnot, I don’t care.
Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but is that a crappy custom stud material?
Actual studs still exist and look better than any attempt I’ve seen to recreate them with materials. The only benefit to materials is using them on parts like cylinders, which you aren’t.
As for the “Halloween” section, well there’s not much at all to review on. Its the same layout minus the trees and grass.
I’d personally just not go with the studs and use actual materials, and maybe work to make it less empty and less flat.
To sum up everything I think of it, it’s both boring and generic. If that’s what you were aiming for, congrats.
The map feels way too empty. It’s basically a wide green carpet with a few palm trees sprinkled around. You need more landmarks (rocks, ruins, docks, cliffs, or literally anything for players to explore.)
The structures look copy-pasted and kind of “diet Roblox starter pack.” That striped-roof hut is adorable, but lonely, give it neighbors
The daytime screenshot is fine, but the night one looks like someone turned the contrast up and forgot to add actual atmosphere. Where are the torches, glowing crystals, campfires, or anything that makes nighttime worth seeing? Right now, its just black void with bright green bushes.
Color variety is almost nonexistent. Everything is that default bright green, bright brown, bright leaf green. It screams “default brick colors.” Youll get way more depth if you play with muted tones, darker grass patches, and gradients.
And also, what’s this island for? Survival? PVP? Roleplay? Right now it looks really unfinished imo.
Hey! no offence taken the point is to get feedback from others especially builders, how can you use “Actual studs” in studio without custom material?
As for the Halloween section nothing was done except unfinished lighting and just change colors on bushes. If you see on the post I stated what ideas I was thinking of such as adding different types of trees with no leaves, and decorations. The Halloween section is not finished and quite frankly not even actually started I only changed some colors around and asked for thoughts before continuing.
I totally agree, again. The Halloween section wasn’t quit even started except changing colors around and i gave some insight as to what i was thinking of adding in to it. Torches, glowing crystals, campfire all sound like cool ideas to add! As for the colors I just wanted to use a similar pallet to old ROBLOX Halloween colors.
But adding elevations, rocks are all things I plan on updating to it.
You have to set the SurfaceType of a Part to Enum.SurfaceType.Studs, it’s not visible in the properties tab but it does infact still exist.
Here’s something that just applies actual studs to all parts in workspace:
for _, part in workspace:GetDescendants() do
if part:IsA("Part") then
part.Material = Enum.Material.Plastic
part.MaterialVariant = ""
part.TopSurface = Enum.SurfaceType.Studs
part.BottomSurface = Enum.SurfaceType.Studs
part.LeftSurface = Enum.SurfaceType.Studs
part.RightSurface = Enum.SurfaceType.Studs
part.FrontSurface = Enum.SurfaceType.Studs
part.BackSurface = Enum.SurfaceType.Studs
end
end
(You can just copy-paste this into the command bar)
There is quite a different in the look of real and fake studs:
Left: Real | Right: Fake
