So I’m learning to script. And I’ve been told that the best way to get good is to make actual games. Start with simple games that test your skills and work your way to your dream game.
I was wondering if any scripters here have any good ideas for simple game systems that can help a beginner scripter learn more by making them.
In my experience, starting off by making a game is a pretty bad idea as even if it’s simple, something you might not realize is that even though you learn about the process, idea gathering, thought tracking, etc., you don’t know if what you’re doing is the right thing and as such you might begin to learn the wrong lesson. I believe the most common application of this, all though not related to game development, is people who watch AlvinBlox and instinctively put waits at the top of their scripts.
If you want to get better at programming, don’t make games, just make showcases of assets. Eventually, you might be able to haul all of that together into a B game, but making smaller assets helps with so much more, like motivation, not getting burnt out and learning programming.
