Small Dutch-Inspired Boats from Tangled

Before I built castles, I built sailboats, and I still make some small ones when I have time. Over the past few months I’ve been making the boats seen in this image:

These sailboats appeared in the background of Disney’s Tangled, and were inspired by Dutch designs from the Age of Sail. They were operated by citizens and soldiers of Corona, the kingdom from that movie.

The boat on the left is a Hoy, which The Elements and Practice of Rigging and Seamanship describes as “{S}mall vessels with one mast, that carries a spritsail, a foresail set to the stem, and a jib upon a short bowsprit. Sometimes they have a short mast abaft, that carries a small spritsail.” My model of it can be found here:

Note that this model is six months old and predates the release of CSG.

In the middle is a Galliot, which is described as “{A} large Dutch vessel, of burthen, with one mast and a bowsprit. The mast is supported by 4 or 5 pair of shrouds, and a stay which sets up to the stem. Over this stay is another, that leads to the bowsprit-end. Abaft the mast they carry a large gaff or spritsail, and over it a flying topsail, a staysail upon the main-stay, and one or two jibs on the bowsprit, Sometimes a small mast is stepped quite aft, abaft which is set a gaff or spritsail, hauled out to a boom at the foot.” My model is here:

On the right is another Hoy, larger than the first. It actually uses the same hull as the Galliot, but scaled down by about 25%. This made it relatively quick to build. My model is here:

All of these boats are free to use for whatever you wish, as long as you give me credit for building them. If you’d like to test drive them, you can do so here:

The Corona dock is on the left.

EDIT: I should also say that the script that drives the boat was originally made by Mark298, although I have made some small modifications.

Hey! That’s my code! <3 And that! That’s my skybox and water in Arendelle. Unfortunately, Arendelle disconnected me before I could explore more.

Anyway, I’m loving the boats.

Quality boats. You don’t often see such well built boats like these on Roblox. Props!

Those are terrific boats! I appreciate that the hull parts are exactly aligned. Also, on the Galliot the top line of red parts is all rectangular parts with no wedge fillers! I’m amazed you could find the exact right tilt for those parts to create the desired hull shape. Great job!

It is? But it has Mark’s name in it. :? Your skybox was the best I could find that could both a) represent a fjord, and b) didn’t have weird white lines running through it. Any time you’d like to make a high-definition fjord skybox, just let me know. Arendelle often has problems with getting in because of all the unions I use. Once CSG streaming comes out, though… :imagine:

Thank you!

Thank you! CmtUtil’s SelectEdge tool was very helpful there, but if I had had Stravant’s Gap Fill and Ege Align plugins at the time it would have been even more precise. Your mirror script was a godsend.

How does SelectEdge even work, for that matter? I’ve tried it and I haven’t figured out how to use it at all.
Otherwise, amazing boats.

  1. Select the part(s) you want to rotate.

  2. Click ‘SelectEdge’ button.

  3. Hold down ‘Alt’, and click on the edge you want to rotate the parts around. This edge does not need to be on one of the parts you selected.

  4. Rotate the parts using the rotate grabber thingy that appears. You can change the increment if 45° isn’t suitable.

Once you know how to use it, you’ll wonder how you ever got by without it.
