Strange 'Highlight' behavior - AlwaysOnTop not respected

I’m a developer for a game called Rogue Lineage. A couple of hours ago, I began to receive bug reports from players regarding an ability that uses Highlights to let players see other characters through walls no longer working. I’ve tested this both during runtime and in a Team Create studio instance. I’ve also tested to ensure that this is indeed happening in multiple different places.

What’s happening with DepthMode set to AlwaysOnTop (GIF):

It appears to keep showing for a little bit after going out of view of the camera, but after I move the camera far enough, it no longer displays as intended.

What’s happening with DepthMode set to Occluded is still as expected - you cannot see it through any parts at all.

Expected behavior

The ‘AlwaysOnTop’ setting of the DepthMode property belonging to the Highlight instance should cause it to show in front of all BaseParts without exception.

I am experiencing the same issue in my game, hope a fix can come out on ROBLOX’s end.

This is due to Roblox’s occlusion culling. To improve rendering performance, it only renders objects that are:

  • In the camera’s view
  • Not hidden by any other object

Even though rig with the highlight is technically in the cameras view, it doesn’t render it due to it being hidden by the baseplate, which also takes away the highlight.

You can see it still rendering the rig and highlight here because its foot is poking out:

Hopefully they can make an exception for objects with highlights set to AlwaysOnTop.

Hi. Thank you for reporting this issue.
We reverted the feature causing the bug. Please let me know if this continues to impact you.

I’m gonna close out this ticket since I haven’t heard more reports of this issue
