Strange "text mode" in script editor

I do not mean to waste anybody’s time, but this is driving me nuts.

I appeared to have triggered a mode which autoreplaces unselected code instead of functioning like a “normal” editor. It flashes with a white bar (as seen in the screenshot above)

Does anyone know what this is, and how to turn it off?

Try disabling all plugins and then check again

If I read correctly, this looks like it was caused by the Insert key.
