Recently Roblox seems to have rolled out a change that affects how background Roblox instances are throttled on performance/framerate.
However, it currently does not seem to properly context switch between an active running game instance vs active studio test session. As a result, I am forced to play test in studio at an unplayable framerate whenever I have a live game instance open.
This is part of a very important live-testing debugging process where I hop into a real server and try figuring out issues with players with an open studio play session tab,
[Repro steps]
Open studio and start a test session
Join any roblox game
Observe your studio test session performance
[Video repro of issue]
(PS: 10 MB limit on videos is way too low to show anything, especially involving framerate)
Hello, would you try to disable next gen studio beta feature, and close explorer and find replace widget, then see the performance issue is still happening?
Did those following steps, but the same exact issue still happens.
What it looks like to me is that whenever I am tabbed into the live game instance, the microprofiler seems to indicate that the studio instance is also running at full framerate in the background. But once I tab into the studio instance window, both the live game instance and studio instance now run at the reduced rates.
I would throw a guess that somewhere in the logic there’s a conditional that’s flipped in how its handling these cases.
What is clear to me is that my PC is fully capable of running both of these instances at full framerate.
I have two monitors and I can see that both the live game and studio instances are running perfectly fine when I am tabbed into the live game as seen below (posted as an image because recording both 4k monitors is impractical)
Once I tab into the studio window, I can see both the game and studio instance automatically drop in a consistent throttled framerate which is no accident.
I have the same issue as above, As long Roblox Studio is in Focus I have heavy frame drops. When it’s not in focus it runs smooth. I would guess that the flag for that studio is in focus is flipped somewhere. Currently it makes writing scripts almost impossible.
I’m experiencing the same problems as well: the application is being throttled whenever I focus on the window. This happens in the editor, and when I run the game inside of Studio. Disabling the Next Gen Studio Preview beta feature did not solve the issue, either.
However, the other member on my team is NOT experiencing this throttling behavior. I don’t know if it is relevant, but he never used the Next Gen Studio Preview.
I did not see a G-sync option on the Nvidia control panel. I did disable V-sync just to see if it did anything, but the issue still persists on my end.
Hey litozinnamon, could you share your microprofile dumps - I’m not able to reproduce this locally.
Also could you confirm if you see this under other conditions, like having 2 Studios open in test mode (but no client), or having Studio and some other 3D app like a game on Steam? Curious if it’s specifically studio and client interacting badly.
I’m seeing similar issues with two studios open as well.
One interesting condition - a steam notification popup or any sort of windows notification will also completely drop the framerate on the active client.
Another key consideration is that I’m running two 4k monitors at 144Hz (on an RTX 3080TI). I suspect that most people aren’t seeing the effects because it’s not noticeable enough on their setups, while mine are much more amplified from the number of pixels that needs to be rendered.
I’m not able to post the microprofile dumps here because it says the filetype is unsupported here. If you can let me know how I should reach out to send those that would be great.
