My automatic train game is experiencing sudden heavy server performance hits, leading to sudden physics throttling with no apparent cause.

This leads to a so-called domino effect, where the FPS becomes worse and worse to the point of the game being unplayable. Besides, it seems that when a new train spawns, it becomes worse, however I’m not sure if that’s the actual cause.
BTW this did not happen a few days earlier when I released my game. I haven’t made any major changes since then except for a few bug fixes.
How can I fix this?
