Tessera Game Engine - An Open Source Roblox Alternative

Hi everyone, I’ll keep this short and to the point.

EDIT:
Sorry forgot to attach videos. they are at the bottom of the post

Tessera is being designed as a familiar next step for Roblox Studio users, with a workflow that closely mirrors the Roblox development experience so the learning curve stays minimal. At the same time, it will go significantly further in terms of performance, features, and overall developer workflow.

The engine will support direct publishing to Steam and itch.io as a standalone cross platform executable, or deployment to Imperium’s cloud game platform, which will provide a Roblox-style cloud gameplay experience. It will also include built-in, plug-and-play multiplayer networking. Games made with Tessera can also be exported to run in browsers

I have been working on this engine for nearly two years now, and I cannot wait to see what you create with it.

I understand this will never reach the scale of Roblox (would be great if it does), and that is not the goal. My aim is to create a practical stepping stone from the simplicity and accessibility of Roblox Studio to a faster, more performant, feature-rich game engine where you can build, own, and distribute your games however you choose. I believe that the talented developers of Roblox SHOULD own their games outright with no dependency on a third party platform which in essence has total control and final say over your hard work.

I want to bring the power back to the developers, as I see the talent that ALL of you guys have creating these incredible games on this platform and you all deserve a proper place to continue that work without being forced AI Slop, censorship, size limits etc.

Tessera will also offer optional advanced technical systems for experienced developers, including custom shader creation in-engine, custom graphics pipelines, and Rust scripting support for those who do not want to use Luau.

I’ve seen videos of this and I can confidently say this would be a great next step for Roblox developers. My question being, how do you monetize it?

where?? i can’t find any in the links provided in the post

If you get hate saying just give up blah blah ignore them
Roblox needs competition badly and i will be glad to learn this and all that stuff
We need an active competitor that is actually good so keep developing bro

sorry, added them to the post now

Thank you for your kind words. I will be completely honest, I do not know how I will monetize it. I’m hoping the patron will be enough to keep development going and cover SOME of the hosting costs but this is probably not going to happen. I also understand that people are not going to switch from a free service which has been around for ages to a new paid one. I think the Arclight platform (our roblox client game player) might have a currency like robux, but I dont really want this tbh.

Thank you, means a lot. This is a passion project for me and I NEED an engine like this for my own use so no matter what this will be maintained and developed.

I haven’t read much so sorry for that, but will you be able to export the games you make in tessera as its own exe in a folder with its dependencies or something?

Yes, it will support cross platform executables, straight upload to steam, itch, epic as well as consoles and web.

It will also allow for uploading your game to our cloud service, Arclight, which works the same as the roblox player. pick a game and play it

I honestly recommend adding a currency for when this becomes bigger, it is all up to you though great to see more stuff like this

Hi, at the moment there are no demos games, bit of an oversight from me lol. I am working on fleshing out the core of the engine and the basic tooling before launching any demos because I want to release demos and the engine alongside eachother and also hopefully rely on the community to show what the engine can do.

i also have a bit of stage fright if you get what i mean, i dont want to release anything too early and people get a bad impression, its only me working on this at the moment and i want it to be perfect before testing and stuff.

That is quite true - competition is always good.
Just like politics - don’t let there be a monopoly that controls everything & holds you hostage.
That being said - right now I like Roblox (as most) - but this is a good optional outlet.

It would be nice if @uzii_dev could get investors & set up servers as well…
.. but it’s also nice that it can be uploaded as a single file to Arclight, Steam, Itch & Epic as well.
Which Roblox Studio does not allow.

Don’t give up @uzii_dev - you have a winning formula.
