[Test] Encouraging users to complete an age check to chat

[Update] January 7, 2025

We have shipped a global age check requirement to chat. Please continue discussing here:

[Update] October 30, 2025

Hi Creators,

In September, we announced our ambitions to expand Facial Age Estimation for chat to all users by the end of year. Starting this week, we are running a limited test to encourage users to complete an age check to chat. This is part of our commitment to make conversations age-appropriate.

Some users may see the following in-app prompt in the coming days.

What Creators Need to Know

  • This test encourages users to have their age checked via Age Estimation or ID Verification.
    • For now, all users will be able to chat as they were able to previously.
    • By the end of the year, we’ll work to allow as many users on Roblox as possible to age check, and receive this notification.
    • Early next year, users will be required to be age checked to chat on Roblox, including Experience chat, Voice chat and Party chat.

In the coming weeks, we will be sharing a full announcement with comprehensive details, including a breakdown of our upcoming safety initiatives, what you need to know, and any necessary actions.

We appreciate your ongoing support as we continue to evolve safety for everyone on Roblox. Stay tuned for updates.

oh no.
I don’t recall previous discussion about data retention for this. I hope it isn’t stored, otherwise a data breach like Discord’s Zendesk breach is just waiting to happen again.

OH NO
I know this change is going to be VERY problematic to war/security roleplay groups. It is very common for higher ranks to use the chat to either groups of or individual players. Giving orders or coordinating actions is going to be become painful when a sizable chunk of the players can’t chat at all - even more so without an indicator to know they are mute in larger servers.

Cameras aren’t always a given either. Handheld consoles, like the upcoming ASUS ROG Xbox Ally, typically don’t come with them. The schools I’ve been at typically don’t equip desktops with cameras either.

Do people really have to now expose their documents or facial features online just to be able to meet new people and actually enjoy MULTIPLAYER games?

Also, really look into the meaning of the word “encourage”

I don’t even really use chat, but I’m not about to give a selfie just to use this. Can we not start pushing ID verification as a means to do…literally anything?

Soooo… I guess nobody cares about privacy anymore?

cool update! people wanted safety and roblox keeps bringing it!

I have a concern about players who only play on computer. Most PC computers don’t come with a webcam. What about a younger player who doesn’t own a mobile device and solely plays on their PC? Seems like a bit of an oversight.

This is a great security feature. It is also a great incentive for people to get the Roblox app downloaded to their mobile devices too!

The issue is that many players don’t own a mobile device. Many only play on console/PC computer (without a built-in webcam).
