I’d be lying if I said I didn’t care about not being able to chat, but I’m still never going to send a picture of my face to Roblox. I know a lot of people, including myself, have complained about Roblox’s inadequate security measures, but I don’t think this is the right way to go about things, or at least not the best way.
The picture is deleted after 30 days, but what exactly happens to it during those 30 days? What if there’s a data breach during those 30 days? It’s frustrating that ID verification is required. A lot of people don’t feel safe having their image in Roblox or Persona, yet they’re simply ignored—it’s either ID verification or they can’t chat.
Summary
Well… I’m not sure if I’ll do it, but I’m fundamentally against it. I wouldn’t really feel safe.
If this doesn’t get rolled back and manages to become an actual common requirement for all users, I’m going to completely disable text chat in my game and re-create Roblox’s old safe chat system.
This sounds excessive in my opinion. All users should be able to chat, regardless. At the very least, allow unchecked users a predetermined chat list with options to select from. Like “Hello!” Or “Do you want to play [___]?”
Take Among Us for example. You need to use quick chat if you are not signed in. There are standalone messages, and messages where you can change a part. We can certainly use a system like that here in Roblox, rather than requiring millions of people to provide their own identify.
Take my example of predetermined messages for a start. We can have loads of different messages with dynamic options.
For example, we can use the player’s top 5 most recent games played to fill in the gap inside “Do you want to play [___]”
Or, a user selection panel for messages like “[___] wants to play with us”
Again, I reiterate: All users need chat. If you’re going to restrict free chat, limit it to predetermined messages.
Corporations are famous for their high regard of user data and privacy, and are most certainly not known to engage in the collection, sharing, and profiteering of said data. It is also a well known fact that a “data breach” has never happened, where malicious actors manage to exfiltrate extremely personal and sensitive information from these corporations (with heavy sarcasm, of course).
Bravo, Roblox, nothing speaks to upholding the safety of your users quite like an invasion into their privacy.
the chat wasnt the issue in the first place. bad actors can come in the form of malicious players and games. this won’t achieve anything other than kids trying to bypass age verification to get access back
Instead of completely restricting chat to age estimated users, they should bring back Super Safe Chat. This type of chat uses preset message buttons instead of a text box and is much safer because only Roblox can determine what goes on those message buttons.
none of the in-site roblox links provided mention the fact that this is powered by AI technology. this is information only available on persona’s site, and not on any of roblox’s own sites. which feels deliberate.
not sure how i feel about millions of children’s faces being uploaded for some AI to look at
