Following our recent announcement, we will be testing time-based avatar items, where creators can offer items for 3, 7, or 14 days, providing a flexible alternative to permanent purchases. We believe timed options will give more users the opportunity to try out new styles while unlocking fresh opportunities for creators – such as seasonal items. We will begin testing with a few categories before expanding to more later this year.
Our first test for timed options begins the week of February 2, 2026, for all 3D items in the t-shirts, pants, and sweaters categories. Participation is optional. If you would like to opt your items out of this test, you can manage your settings following the steps below:
To opt out for all items:
Go to the Creations > Avatar items page.
Click the Timed option button to turn timed options to Off for all items.
We are starting with these specific categories to gather feedback and learnings before expanding more broadly. We appreciate your partnership as we test this new feature and will share more updates on the future of timed options in the coming weeks.
Thank you for the instructions to opt out of rentals! Little confused on why this is being presented as a good way to experiment with new styles when Roblox knows about the huge success of experiences like Catalog Avatar Creator.
In my opinion, renting out digital clothes preys on impulsive purchases from players who’d normally have to wait and save up robux to buy the item permanently. The fact rentals are priced similarly to how much UGC accessories cost before dynamic pricing just feels like rubbing salt in the wound.
Before anyone or any investor that believe’s “This is a brilliant idea!”
“Trying out” an items requireing you to pay a specific fee just to SEE if an outfit works
seems ridiculous. Not even Clothing stores do this.
There is various Experiences, Plugins, AND Roblox’s own previewer that solve this non-existant problem
If you ever want to try out an item and see if an outfit works before purchasing, Roblox’s App previewer works.
Or create an outfit using an experience thats oriented around finding you the right outfits.
If Roblox is planning ahead on trying to close off these options to people like sunsetting the previewer. You are guranteed to get backlash.
Timed options should definitely be cheaper. There’s no benefit in paying 50% price for an item if you can only wear it for 3 days. I’d say a week minimum for 50%.
If a user rents an avatar accessory, can the robux spent on renting the accessory contribute to a discount if the user decides to purchase the accessory outright?
For example: say a user were to rent an avatar accessory 3 days for 30 robux and the avatar accessory costs 60 robux. Once the renting period is over, the user can pay 30 more robux and get to keep it.
In this way it could benefit both creators and users, as users will be more likely to try out items knowing that they’d be paying the same amount in case they like the style the put together.
I feel like there are better ways to try items on, such as using something like Catalog Avatar Creator. Realistically, this feature would only make sense for more expensive items, like Violet Valkyrie or other high-value items. A better approach might be allowing players to rent limited items. Since limiteds are usually expensive, renting would give them another use case and make them more desirable. Renting very cheap items, on the other hand, doesn’t really make sense.
love how much of a scam the pricing is! really preys on users in poorer regions, and very young children who don’t entirely grasp how much of a scam it is. true innovation. maybe this will push roblox to profitability
With the quick release window of 2 weeks, this new change sounds concerning for developers. How will this affect all Game APIs related to Owning, Item Info, and Completed Purchases.
There is currently no documentation or info related to knowing which type the user purchased in-experience or owns.
So what is the issue with trying out avatar items in the dedicated games?
Is this gonna be something that’ll further inflate accessory pricing floor?
What are you gonna do about avatar outfit maker games?
I would really like it if you had to watch an ad to try something out in game for like 15 minutes. And you can give the ad money to the creator. Or you can do a conversion like for every 2 ads people watch you get 1 robux.
So like if 20 people watch ads to get the accessory for 15 minutes then the creator gets 10 robux. Something like that would be awsome.
Edit: using ads is the only way for this feature to be used really well, people should be able to wear a item for 15 minutes before deciding to wear it, and if people don’t buy then at least the creator gets some ad money
Roblox tried rental gears, I think about 17 years ago. Can we receive details on how that went over, monetization-wise? Did it prove to be beneficial? Why was that rental system discontinued?
I feel like this is an absolutely dumb update, I know Rental Items technically used to be a thing with certain gears and whatnot, but this isn’t the same. This is just preying off children and is an absolutely ridiculous choice to make, especially since not every child will know the difference between renting and permanent purchase. Honestly a scummy move.
