[Tests] Continuing to improve the ‘Recommended For You’ algorithm

Hi Creators,

We are launching a series of learning experiments to improve the “Recommended For You” algorithm. Our goal is simple: to help a broad range of creations find their audience and succeed.

To do this, we’ll be showing a wider variety of genres to a small percentage of users.

These tests will help us learn:

  • For Users: Can we help them discover new interests that we are currently not nurturing?
  • For Creators: Can we find a wider audience for your creations that the current algorithm might be overlooking?

What this means for you

We’ve heard your feedback about wanting more genre diversity on the home page, and we’re actively testing ways to broaden the definition of success on Roblox. This is part of that effort.

Keep building and updating experiences that users would enjoy. Our focus on long-term user retention hasn’t changed and our algorithm still values these 6 signals that are transparently shared in your analytics dashboard.

As we test over the next few months, we want to give you a heads up that some experiences may see fluctuations in their “Recommended For You” impressions. You can continue to monitor impressions from various sources including Home Recommendations in your analytics dashboards and we will continue to be transparent with you when we have any meaningful updates to the algorithm.

Thanks,

Roblox Discovery and Creator teams

The algorithm improving is probably always good in some way, hopefully atleast.

Please add a “Not interested” button for games on our home page

I keep getting recommended the same games constantly but I’ll never play them - it’s just wasted space that could be replaced by a game I might actually play

Glad to see, but I once again refer to this post:

It’s coming soon! We’re currently testing it

Can you please make the algorithm serve games that the user might play based on searches aswell? for example: If a user searches “Baldi” a’lot the recommendation algorithm should recommend more Baldi’s Basics games

It sort of already does, because the player searching it plays the games that come up in their search results and therefore get recommended more similar games

Has this already been implemented? We have seen an unusual and substantial CCU drop across all of our studio’s games this week, not associated with a drop in analytics or performance.

Hopefully with this algorithm the whole reccomended page doesn’t change to the specific game you’ve got 1st on continue… :innocent:

Me too, CCU has halved while all metrics stayed the same, except qPTR which is up by 25% over last week. That’s right the stat went up but CCU went down…

I think the whole point of these changes is to prevent that

Hi there, no we haven’t implemented this yet. We wanted to give a heads up first.

Maybe there could be a way for us to build our recommended games section ourselves by pressing a Thumbsup or a Thumbsdown button (as a way to point out to the algorithm that you are interested/not interested in the game/genre that is being recommended).

I have a question if my QPTR is good or above 90th why is my CCU still at 3 or 4 on average?

(yesterday it was at 2.42%)

a “not interested” button would be so good, i’m incredibly sick of seeing brainrot garbage on my recommendations when ive literally never played one of those poor excuses of “games”.

So much THIS! 99% of what I see does not even remotely match my interests. I’ve been on this platform for over 17 years, and in that time I have never played anything involving sports, anime, furry, brainrot, etc. Yet that is all that ever shows up for me. If the algorithm was actually based on games I have played or liked, I’d be seeing WAY more space and military experiences… The Recommended system is in dire need of a rework.

Please let us do a blanketed “not interested” for entire genres, so we can filter out things in bulk. Like I don’t play sports or furry games, so I want to collectively turn them all off. Like how Twitter and other social media lets us mute keywords.

If you guys are trying to broaden the audiences we receive from home recommendations, then adding a “Not Interested” button would do the exact opposite — narrow the range of games shown to players.

This seems cool - good to see you guys are constantly trying to improve discovery.

While we are on the topic of discovery, if I may ask:

Can you please stop using analytics from sponsored ad plays when recommending already established games? Every single metric clocks in much lower from users that play via sponsored ads, and therefore you actually kill whatever momentum you have via recommendation impressions when you run additional sponsors. On a game’s release obviously you need some data to work with, but there needs to be some sort of change so that creators aren’t getting screwed when they spend money on additional advertisements.

I’ve had two games get killed off entirely because I ran additional sponsors after the game was established. I obviously did so with the assumption it would gain me players and be a boost just like it used to back in the day. To my dismay, I noticed my home recommendations literally fall off a cliff in some cases before a couple days of sponsors had even concluded.

Unfortunately it took me quite a while to catch onto this as being the cause and so the knowledge I have now is too little too late, but I’m hoping for the future this can be fixed?

Can we have such a button for the nonsensical continue sort so people can make it make sense again on their own?

I want to be able to make my continue section act like a continue section, and to remove slop I never intend on playing ever again, even in devhunts, such as keys
