I want to have detailed walls to the hallways in a game I’m working on, while also trying to keep the game more optimized for players.
I have heard too many textures can lead to lag, but so can lots of parts. So now I’m wondering, should I use textures to optimize, or would I be better off with using parts to to build. I’m building simple hallways and it’s all closed off (They’re meant to be corridors of a ship), so I question whether more textures and less parts or more textures and less parts would be best for keeping my game less intensive for PC’s to handle.
I currently plan to use textures, but I was hoping to maybe get that checked with more experienced builders before I get too far into building where it will be a pain to go back and fix. Thank you!
I’ve seen games that use a bunch of textures to give it more life and detail. Haven’t had any lag problems with them and I know after using quite a bunch of bricks can definitely lower performance. The thing though, is that I believe it takes quite a bunch of textures in order for it to actually start lowering the performance of devices. This is the same with bricks, you will need to insert quite a bunch of bricks for it to start having performance issues on your device (maybe around 40,000 - 50,000). I believe if you have quite a bit of bricks, all with textures on them, it could probably slow down the device and cause a bit of lag. Hope this helps.
Thank you, that is definitely some very helpful insight. I definitely think I’ve played games like you describe, I think if i use textures in a way that lowers my need for more parts it should definitely go in my favor
