I’ve just finished a game and I’m going to put in some money for advertising. I did some tests with Ads Manager (the roblox ads are so much better than I expected btw), and the only issue is that a lot of people leave very soon after joining. I added a tutorial and I’m not sure if it made a change.
There is a big drop off between equipping a tool and crafting a workbench during tutorial. Players have a big white line showing them where to go, and breaking is just as simple as clicking a few times.
What could possibly be a problem during onboarding?
And also, did you see any problems in the gameplay afterwards? I mostly think about this onboarding, but would like to hear general opinions too.
When I first joined I saw a lot of gui that made me feel a bit overwhelmed. It would be cool if the tutorial slowly made all the gui appear over time rather than making it all appear at once. And skipping the tutorial would make all the buttons appear at once.
During the tutorial I went over to a bush and destroyed it with a rock and then I looked at the tutorial text a bit more closely to find out I needed to break a whole tree with a rock. Breaking a tree with a rock was pretty slow, maybe a bit too slow, but got enough materials to build a crafting table. I have no clue if I placed down the crafting table or anything because the tutorial didn’t tell me to place it down. I think it’s in inventory but I don’t know if it’s the same as the backpack gui because I can’t find a button for inventory on mobile.
After the tutorial, I felt a bit confused on what to do. The tutorial didn’t really show like everything you could do. It would be nice if the tutorial was to teleport you to a different place that way the game can show more of what it can do besides just breaking a tree and dynamically show you stuff
My take away is that the tutorial should probably teach more and not put all the buttons on screen until after the tutorial.
That was just my initial experience playing the game. I felt like I should have explored the game a bit more beyond the tutorial but my WiFi bad right now.
Also I believe the white line disappeared when I mistakenly broke a bush instead of a tree. I just remember not seeing a white line when looking for a tree after breaking a bush. Or maybe it blended in with the snowy environment?
Also make sure to use PolicyService:GetPolicyInfoForPlayerAsync(LocalPlayer).AllowedExternalLinkReferences when showing discord label! The discord label should be hidden if AllowedExternalLinkReferences doesn’t have discord in array because of roblox rules.
I think I am done yapping unless someone replies to me so, bye bye!
The game itself was pretty cool for me, but here’s why it might throw off some audiences:
The UI: Honestly this is probably the main reason. Your UI might be fine for some, but it was overwhelming seeing those many buttons as soon as you join. The buttons themselves are bland, and there is no palette. This doesnt mean should make the UI insanely bright with a stud texture, but rather you should try to stick to a palette and try to decorate it. Its actually very easy to do this, just search palette generator on google and use a website like pixil or piskel to draw the UI.
Feedback: As in, feedback to the player on what they’re doing. Adding things such as a sound for hitting the wood or unanchoring the tree to let it fall after cutting it improves user experience.
The models: This is more of a personal opinion than a feature that causes players to leave. The environmental models are fine, they actually look pretty good and give off the “old roblox” style. But the tools, workbenches and others are much too simplistic. Its worth putting in the extra effort to add some parts to your tools.
That’s the major points I wanted to cover, but I love Booga Booga and games like it so I definetely will play this again when I get the time.
Thank you for such a long reply !!!
I was tweaking the tutorial for past days, even tried out putting it into another place but in the end I settled on improved version in the same place as the rest, because I felt like a lot of people left because of teleport and (even though there was a skip button) feeling forced to do the tutorial.
And yeah I used PolicyService, in fact the very reason I added that is because I learned about PolicyService and that I could put discord in the game thanks to it lol
If you are still low level (below 2 i think?) you can try out the improved tutorial …
The tutorial was much better, so much better that I crafted tools and leather armor. Although during night time it wasn’t too fun when mobs started spawning and some building gameplay began.
Mobs don’t seem too lose sight of you. So if a mob sees you, you basically got to kill it or it will always be targeting you even if you try hiding behind terrain.
I tried placing down a fence while a zombie was chasing me but I am able to place a fence on top of the zombies head, so the fence ended up hovering. I wasn’t sure if there was a move tool for already placed objects so I just destroyed it in the after night. Make the placement ignore mobs so no floating stuff.
I find it a little strange how the mobs are always playing the break animation, it would make more sense if the played it when near a player or wall rather than when they are walking.
On mobile it is hard to rotate something. This is because when you position something and lift your finger up you will place. There should be a button for placing rather then just click. Like a “Place” context button.
